The firm sent a Lincoln Town Car to pick up me and Peter up from our place at 8-o'clock sharp.

“I think you are really going to like Sharon. I know you guys haven't really had an opportunity to talk yet, so maybe you guys can chat.” I was hoping that she would suggest something about her marriage to him, just to test the waters and see how he would respond to something like that coming from another man’s wife.

I knew that he wouldn't do anything and that I could totally trust him, but there was nothing wrong with furthering the discussion of the topic.

We rolled into Charlie and Sharon's driveway and were greeted at the door by the two of them, Sharon in her new white outfit looking like a rockstar and Charlie in a slim, fitted and well-tailored suit. They looked like a million bucks.

“There they are!” Sharon stepped forward to hug me and Peter, while Charlie put his hand out to shake Peter’s and gave me a kiss on the cheek. He smelled like Tom Ford cologne and looked like he had stepped out of a Burberry ad.

Sharon ushered us into the house and my breath was taken away. Straight ahead, the back wall of the foyer was made entirely of floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out to a backyard with an infinity pool and the Pacific Ocean just beyond it. It looked like the sky was right in their backyard. Either side of the foyer was flanked with a grand marble staircase, and a bouquet of dozens of white roses sat atop a small glass table in the old Hollywood Regency style.

It was classy and tasteful. It sure beat the one-bedroom rental Peter and I were living in, with a window looking out to a view of a parking lot.

“Where are the other couples?” I peeked into the dining room and saw that only four places were set.

“It turns out that the Sterns had a last-minute babysitter cancellation, so it looks like it’s just going to be us.” Charlie didn’t seem to be expressing any remorse, and in fact seemed almost delighted to be sharing the news with us. He looked at his wife and then me, and smiled.
