Nicole and Josef were busy firing, keeping the enemy off their heels. The activity seemed to be picking up over the past minute or two. Bridge was now trying to get as much information as possible about the new wrinkle in their plans.

“Are you sure there are more hostages here?”

“Positive,” Allison replied. “We just saw them yesterday.”

“That doesn’t mean they’re still here.”

“They have to be. We would’ve known if they were taken out, or something worse had happened. We would’ve heard.”

“She’s right,” the male hostage said.

“Who are you?” Bridge asked.

“I’m Omar.”

Bridge sighed. He liked this less and less the more he knew. “How many people are we talking about here?”

“Five,” Allison answered.

Bridge sighed again. “Five.”

“The more the merrier, right?” Nicole said, taking a break between firing.

“I don’t know about that.”

“She’s right,” Josef said. “We can use the numbers.”

Bridge looked at the three hostages. He wasn’t sure any of them would actually be beneficial in helping them escape. “Any of you ever handled a gun before?”

The two women shook their heads, but Omar nodded.

“I have.”

Bridge handed him a rifle. Gunfire was in the air all around them. “Here. I know you’re an aid worker, and you like to help and not hurt, but right now, we need you to aid us. And hurt them.”

“I know what’s at stake here,” Omar replied. “I’ll do what’s necessary to get us all out of here.”

Bridge nodded. “All right. We don’t have much time, so I’ll try to give you a little primer here about how to handle it.”

Before Bridge was able to give any kind of lesson, Josef had his hands full with several members of the opposition charging him all at once. Omar immediately brought the gun up and started firing, taking out two of the men. Josef looked back at him and nodded.

Bridge stared at Omar for a moment. “OK, then. Looks like we’re good here.” He then looked at Allison. “Are these five the rest of who’s here? Is there anybody else?”

Allison shook her head. “No, that should be it.”

“They just arrived a few days ago,” Omar said.

“And how sure are you that they’re in the next building?”

“Positive,” Allison answered. “They had all of us outside yesterday for a few minutes, and the other group went inside before we did. We saw them go in. They went next door.”

“OK,” Bridge said. “Next question. Do you know what kind of opposition we’re looking at in there?”

“Probably no more than three of four.” Allison looked at Omar for confirmation.

He agreed. “Yeah. Uh, four. Yeah. I saw four.”

“OK,” Bridge said. “Downstairs, upstairs?”

Allison and Omar both looked at each other, hoping the other had the answer. Neither of them did, though.

“We never saw where they went,” Omar said.

“Not a big deal,” Bridge said. “We’ll find them, regardless.”

He then passed a rifle to each of the other women. Allison took it, though she had no idea what to do with it. The other woman grabbed it as well, but she looked at it as if he were handing her some dirty, smelly object.
