JILL JUMPS INTO THE driver’s seat, leaving Mindy and me to decide who’s going to be shotgun. I let her have it and crawl into the back. We’re all wearing dark clothes and I notice the plow is sporting a new, black, paint job as well as some specialized lights.

“Night lights,” Jill says. “Not so much bright, but they light stuff up good.” She hits the remote and the garage door lifts up. “The bikers have a new game they play – called find the car.”

“Find the car?” The name confuses me.

“Yeah, they drive around at night trying to find someone out and about. When they do they toss these on the road.” She reaches into the glove compartment, pulls out something, and tosses it to me. “I think they call them caltrops.”

The metal contraption is interesting. Four nails joined in the centre, with their points in different directions. I lay it flat on my hand and one point is facing up. A quick turn and another point is up. Very similar to the old caltrops used in the middle ages to stop horses, but more effective for tires.

“No matter how they land, a point is always up.” Jill backs the truck out of the garage. “Makes it hard to keep your tires intact.”

“I can imagine.”

Mindy smiles. “Yeah. When you’re approaching them, they toss them on the ground. The plow usually handles them, but I put it down and the guy didn’t think I’d swerve into him.”

“Is that why the plow is painted?”

Mindy just smiles a little, looks at the roof. “Maybe.”

Two killers, that’s who I live with. “Maybe we should hold off on all the outings you two have been doing. It’s not a good idea to be taking them down so close to the house.”

“Oh, we’re not that–”

“Mindy!” Jill turns to her. “Enough. Steve needs to know what this meeting is about.”

“Sorry. I just got a little excited about all the stuff we found in town.”

“You didn’t go to Uxbridge again?” Dread rises in my gut.

“No, Ballantrae. Lots of stuff there if you know where to look.” Jill throws the truck into gear and taps the garage remote. We all watch as the door closes. “Down. Time to go.”

She hits the gas and the back end spins a little on the fresh snow before the tires grip.
