Chapter 3

After a morning of unrelenting passion, they finally left the house to grab some lunch.

“Don’t you eat?” asked Lily, noticing Beckett hardly touched his meal.

“Only for pleasure. It doesn’t provide nourishment.”

Lily had more questions. “How can you walk in the sunlight? I thought the sun was deadly to your kind.”

“It is deadly, but not to my father or my siblings. Each time vampires are created, their powers decrease. The further they are from the original bloodline, the less immune they are to sunlight, holy water, and wooden stakes to the heart. Only the vampires turned by my father can walk in the sun.”

They spent hours at the café getting to know one other. Each time he spoke, Lily felt her attraction to Beckett grow. He seemed to feel the same. With each conversation, he leaned in, hanging on her every word, smiling as if on cue.

“I’ve never met someone who makes me feel like you do,” Beckett admitted.

“Me neither,” Lily responded with coy honesty.

They spent the rest of the afternoon at Millennium Park, taking in the sights and enjoying the warm, summer weather.

As the sun began to set, Beckett’s phone rang. He picked up and excused himself. Lily sat on bench watching him as his posture turned stiff and rigid.

When he returned, he said, “I need to go somewhere quickly. Do you have somewhere you can go for an hour so that you’re not alone?”

“Yes, I can go to Jonathan’s house.”

“Great. I’ll drop you off, and I will be back for you soon.”
