Chapter Thirty

‘Now tell me about Zimmerman,’ I said. ‘I need to know about him, as well as everybody else who is looking for you, and probably for me as well now.’

‘Not much to tell,’ she said with a shrug. ‘At least, I don’t know much. I know him more by reputation than anything else. I’ve only ever seen him once, and that was just a fleeting glance.’

‘When you first mentioned him, you made him sound like the Miskovs’ enforcer.’

‘I guess that’s what he is. He gets rid of people they don’t want around anymore.’

‘And he’s good at that?’

‘The best.’ She looked at me and sighed. ‘People are scared of him, scared of what he can do.’

‘So they toe the line?’

She nodded.

All organizations need somebody like that, although not necessarily to actually kill people. Mostly they investigate, uncover savoury doings, find out where the money’s gone. Stuff like that. I’ve done some of it myself. But the likes of Zimmerman are on a different scale. They’re very special. What does he look like?’

She frowned as she thought about that.

‘He’s nothing special to look at. Just . . . well, ordinary. You wouldn’t notice him in a crowd, and you wouldn’t remember him later even if you did.’

I nodded. I could understand that.

‘Slim, slight even, average height, short hair, quiet, middle-aged going on elderly . . .’ I recited.

‘You’ve got him! How did you know?’

‘I know the type. The best ones are all like that.’

Not everyone who looks like that is one of them, of course. Far from it. But in my experience, the hard men who get things like that done are guys you wouldn’t pick out in a crowd. You don’t notice them. You wouldn’t even know they were there until it was too late.

Memo to self — Zimmerman must be good.

‘I need to make a phone call,’ Lady announced. ‘I don’t want to, but there will be problems if I don’t. My CIA handler,’ she added with a shrug. ‘I’m supposed to check in with him every day.’

‘Oh?’

‘He’s the guy I called to get the passport and money, and the other stuff.’

What ‘other stuff’, I wondered? The gun she said she didn’t collect?

She must have made a coded request for them, and perhaps other things as well, to avoid the GCHQ computer picking up on anything significant, like the word ‘gun’, as it scans the world’s communications.

‘I wondered about that,’ I said thoughtfully. ‘Where is he — your handler? Do you know?’

‘Not exactly, but I know he’s close. At least, someone is.’

‘So he’s not in Chicago, or Washington?’

She shook her head. ‘They keep close tabs on me. Not for my protection either, although they come in useful if I am in trouble.’

‘So it seems. I was surprised how fast they responded to your call for . . . what shall we call it? Logistical support? Less than two hours, and everything was in place for you.’

‘Yeah. The downside is, they’re so close I can scarcely breathe. If
