I PRESSED THE GUN INTO Mr Harper’s face and cocked the trigger. Craig had a length of fishing line around his fiancée’s neck and was jerking her back violently while talking her through what he was going to do to her after she was dead. Mr Harper would’ve liked to have screamed or begged us for mercy or something at this point but the thick electrical tape across his and his pretty fiancée’s mouths meant that neither had a chance to interject until me and Craig had shared our thoughts on his decision to take the stand.

I moved around behind the chair and yanked his head back by the hair so that the gun was pressed hard against the back of his neck. Mr Harper and Emily (I’ve always liked that name) were now facing each other and after four minutes of mental and physical assault, they must’ve thought their time had finally come. Blood dribbled from Emily’s neck as Craig began strangling her again and I could feel Mr Harper squirming with frustration beneath me. I let him watch for a few more terror-inducing seconds before delivering the coup de grâce.

‘Rape her,’ I told Craig. ‘Do it now.’

Craig pulled her chair back and she fell onto the floor. I did the same with Mr Harper’s so that he immediately lost sight of what was happening with Emily. Imagination is sometimes so much more powerful than image. I thrust the gun into his eye socket and bore down on him so that my cold-blooded eyes were just inches from his and finally showed him the only doorway out of this nightmare. ‘Retract your statement,’ I told him.

Up until this moment, it had all been about the terror. We’d made no mention of a deal or a demand or anything of that nature. We’d simply used the time to instil as much pants-pissing fear into them as possible to make a deal seem all the more attractive when it finally was put before them.

Mr Harper nodded so hard against my pistol that he almost made me knock the trigger. I withdrew it slightly in the interests of safety but kept my face where it was.

‘I fucking mean it,’ I growled. Mr Harper nodded again, keen to get across that he understood. ‘Don’t make us come back. They can’t protect you,’ I told him and quickly stood up.

I pulled his chair into an upright position and cut the ropes that bound his wrists; well we didn’t want anyone else having to free them now did we? All we wanted was the statements to disappear, not another seven crimes investigated. Mr Harper looked across at Emily and saw her untouched except for the mark around her neck. Of course, we wouldn’t have really raped her but when you’re going for maximum fear, minimum time, you have to wheel out the big guns. It’s not a nice thing to have to do, but then, it’s not meant to be.

I pushed Mr Harper back down as he tried to stand and drilled into him one last time the seriousness of our intent.
