Chapter 18

TJ COMES out of the bathroom in our hotel room, and nods when he sees me on the phone. “I’m going to grab some drinks and ice while I call my mom.” He speaks quietly as though he doesn’t want to interrupt my conversation with my mom, even though she hasn’t answered yet. I don’t know why, but I find that cute.

“’Kay. See ya in a minute.” After we had lunch earlier, I didn’t have the balls to hold his hand when we left, but I kind of figure that’s okay. And I think he did too. I drove the rest of the way into Philly, and then we had picked up some fast food before coming to the hotel. I took the first shower, and he grabbed the second one. I’d expected him to start screwing around with the footage we’ve shot so far, but he didn’t.

“Hey, you.” There’s nothing but happiness in Mom’s voice.

“Hey. How are you guys?”

She talks a little about work and how Tyson is staying with his best friend, which I’m sure he’s stoked about. Mom’s friends with his mom, so I’m sure she’s trying to help out since I’m gone.

We don’t have a whole lot to talk about because I told her about Dave and Richie after our interview with them, and before the party that she knows absolutely nothing about. I plan to keep it that way.

“What are you guys doing tonight?” she asks.

“I’m not sure. TJ usually messes around with his camera or laptop all night, but he said something earlier about watching some movies. He’s into gangster stuff too. He has a few he wants me to see.”

So, maybe it’s uncool to know your mom as well as I do, but it’s the truth, and as soon as I say that, I know her mind is running wild with questions and assumptions she’s not sure she should spit out or not. Talking about a guy with my mom is pretty much one of the top three things in my life I never want to do, so I say, “Don’t ask, Mom.”

“Blah. You’re no fun. You’re having a good time, though? You’re experiencing a lot?”

Even though she can’t see me, I nod. “Yeah, it’s been cool. We talk to people who are so different, and it’s… I guess it helps me to see….” I have no idea what I’m trying to say. “I guess it helps me see that I’m just like everyone else. Or can be, or….” I had it in my head that gay is supposed to be one way—who even knows what that way is—but there is no one way to be a gay person just like there’s not one way to be anyone else.

“Oh, sweetheart. Of course you are.”

I love her for what she wants to do here, but again, talking with my mom about some stuff is just strange. “TJ said we might not be able to meet with the guy we’re supposed to see tomorrow until the next day.
