On the Subjugation of Men

“You must certainly will be blooded, young lady,” the Duchess of Bedford said firmly. “I will not allow you to disgrace this family’s honor. You will lose your virginity before your upcoming nuptials or, by her Imperial Majesty’s scepter, I will turn you out of my house.”

It was all Fiona Freda Bedford could do not to roll her eyes. One minute her grandmother was ranting about how Fiona was going to uphold the family honor by letting some stranger take her virginity. The next minute she was threatening to throw her only living female relative out into the cold, which would leave no one to uphold said family honor.

“I will not be a part of it.” Fiona said.

The Duchess leaned forward, her green eyes narrowing behind her silver-rimmed spectacles. “Are you afraid? Is that it? I’m surprised. You’re usually not frightened of anything.”

“I’m not afraid.”

“Good, because I won’t lie to you. There will be pain, but I’ve secured the services of the most accomplished blooder in the country.”

“No. It’s a barbarous practice and I refuse to be a part of it.”

The Duchess drew back, the diamonds in the tiara she wore no matter the occasion, sparkling from the afternoon sunlight streaming in from the large parlor windows. “Barbarous? Whatever do you mean?”

“We treat men as if they were nothing but beasts in the field. Fit only to toil and to labor and to….to….be put out to stud.”

The Duchess sniffed. “Good Lord, child, it’s only as it should be. They’re hardly fit for anything else.”

“But that’s because we don’t allow them to be anything else,” Fiona cried. “It’s not right. The Red Plague was not their fault.”

“I didn’t say it was. But nothing can change what happened. I might have been a very young girl at the time, but I remember what it was like before the plague and men were the ones in charge. Trust me, it’s far better this way.”

Fiona did not agree. But she and her grandmother had had this discussion before. Over seventy years ago the Red Plague killed off most of the men and, even more horribly, nearly all of the male babies contracted the disease soon after birth and died. A cure was never found, but the plague eventually ran its course. However, in Great Britain, Europe, Russia and a large portion of Asia, the plague left behind a population made primarily up of women.

Men, as a result, did not occupy positions of any real merit. Once they were of age they were used primarily to provide women with children and heirs. But that was only if a woman could afford their services, or was wealthy enough to snare one as a husband.

And then there were the blooders. Men skilled in the ways of relieving a woman of her virginity. It was considered the height of impropriety for a woman to go to her wedding bed still in possession of her maidenhead. Most blooders were also used as studs to provide women with heirs, but the blooder the Duchess had hired would only take Fiona’s virginity.
