CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

The Chinese Embassy

NW, Washington, D.C.

Midnight US Time

When Rome was beginning to dawn, it was midnight in Washington. And while the moon shed light upon a man who was lying prone on the roof of a three-story building across from the condo of the Chinese Embassy with a set of binoculars, he was watching the Chinese Ambassador move from room to room reading documents in one hand while holding a glass of liquor in the other.

Mùyáng Chow had served as China’s ambassador for nearly a decade, the man a stalwart of Chinese politics and a respected leader in the eyes of the Chinese president. He was also slated by the leader of the Black Templars as a targeted killing, meaning that Chow would be assassinated outside a judicial procedure or a theater of war. His death would tip the already tense relationships between China and the United States well beyond the boiling point. With disinformation spread across social media by the Black Templars for China’s PLA intelligence to purposely appropriate and glean from, China would retaliate, bringing the two countries closer to a military engagement.

Setting the binoculars aside, the Black Templar knew that in the days to come, he would be given the greenlight to kill Chow from his perch on a third-floor rooftop with a direct view of Chow’s condo.
