June 14, Very Early MorningâQueens, New York
Outside, Traneâs operatives were strategically posted throughout the neighborhood. They took tactical positions on both ends of the street, around the house, and near the sedan where Traneâs two agents sat dead in the front seat. Tomãs had executed them without a struggle. Heâd shown no mercy.
Ana had shown him the same courtesy.
She stopped on the front stoop and surveyed the area. âIâm sorry about your men.â
âSo am I.â Trane looked down the street where his team was working the sedan with the two dead operatives inside. âIâm sorry, too, Ana, for you having to send your family away and for having to involve you in all this. But youâre our best chance of stopping Hemingway.â
If Traneâs people werenât his best chance, could she truly handle what was coming? Vergaraâs Cuban operatives were prosâevidenced by Tomãsâs lethal success against Traneâs team in the sedan. Tomãsâs weakness had been overestimating himself. If he hadnât been so overconfident, she might be dead. Yet, Trane felt she was his best chance. Was she?
âIâll do my best. But understand, Iâm in this for our deal, nothing more. Remember that.â
âGot it.â
Ana knew that if she was going to survive this dangerous game with Trane, sheâd have to dig deep and employ all her skills from her past. Everyone wanted Hemingway: the CIA, the Cubans, who knew who else might be in the game. The Cubans already showed they were willing to kill in order to win. Back in the Caverns, sheâd learned the stakes. What she couldnât fathom was why and how her parents had become entwined with a Cuban assassin heading to America. Joining FARC was one thing. Sheâd understood, for the most part, how they could join a cause fighting a corrupt government oppressing its people. For too long, sheâd believed she was a revolutionary too, fighting the good fight. Her disillusionment had come when sheâd witnessed the defenders of justice become no better than their enemy.
Still, what theyâd done had little direct impact on her homeâon America. Hemingway was different. There was no misunderstanding what would happen if Hemingway succeeded in assassinating Washington leaders. There would be retaliation against Havana. It could escalate ferociously. There could be war, and not just with a small Caribbean island.
For her, however, the crisis was not communism vs. democracy. Not Havana vs. Washington. It was simpler than that. It was a little seven-year-old orphan. It was Mamá and Pappa. Yiayia Poppi. It was about a new life. A safe life. Family.
All that was impossible if Hemingway succeeded. If that meant traveling to Mexico and hunting Hemingwayâeven with the CIAâthen that is what she was going to do. Her family for Hemingway.
It was no choice at all.
âLetâs go, Ana. In my Suburban.â Trane signaled his men they were ready. âIâve got transport waiting.â
âWhat about McLaren?â
âYeah, him.â He guided her toward a large black Suburban parked just outside the fence gate. âMcLaren wants you at the Caverns until I have your mother. Iâm to take my team to Monterrey and retrieve her.
