Luca and I did not speak in the car. There was a tension between the two of us as he zipped through the streets of New York. I probably should have said something since it was clear he was not going to.

But I was exhausted by him. He ran hot and cold, and I’d had enough.

Looking out at the scenery, I started to notice some familiar landmarks.

“Are you taking me home?” I asked, feeling a bit of panic as I thought about Luca showing up to my house, especially after everything that happened that evening. I didn’t know where I expected him to take me, but my house was the last place.

“Yes,” Luca said, simply.

Panic started to pull at my chest. “You can’t take me home,” I said.

My voice was high-pitched as I tried to figure out how to convince Luca to let me out before we got to my house. He might consider that he was doing the chivalrous thing, but my father might kill him if he caught sight of him.

My mind flashed back to the hard set of his jaw in the car on the way home. Yes, he would be pissed. Murder might not follow, but honestly, who knew at this point.

“Why not?”

As Luca’s car cut the distance towards my parent’s home, I contemplated jumping out. We weren’t going too fast, so while I would likely just be maimed, I wouldn’t die.

Losing an arm might be preferable to Luca at my parent’s door, especially, since I would have to explain how I snuck out.

“Oh my god.” I groaned as I slid down in my chair at the thought of what would happen next.

My breathing shortened, and I did not realize that I was hyperventilating until my vision started to blur.

“Fuck,” Luca muttered.

He zipped the car around, so that he could double park on a side street.

Not that I could focus on his actions. My chest was tight, and I was gasping for air like a fish out of water.

It had been years since I’d had a panic attack, and the forcefulness of it caught me off guard. Oxygen was cut to my brain, and no matter how I tried, I couldn’t center my thoughts.

Control was nonexistent in this moment, so I just tried my best not to claw at the pressure that settled on my chest.

This too would pass. It was just a matter of when and how much damage would occur in the meantime.

As I sucked in gulps of air, I felt the heavy weight of Luca’s hand on my back. “Place your head between your knees,” he ordered. He pressed me slightly down with the heel of his hand.

He drew shapes on my back as he spoke soothing word. Looking down at the floorboards, I counted the pieces of lint that I saw, not that there was much. Sometimes centering my attention on something else helped me to focus.

After what felt like forever, my breathing slowed enough for me to think

“Everything is alright,” Luca was still rubbing my back.
