Lydia fell against the door, her legs too weak to hold her. The buggy rolled out of the yard. She waited, wondering if Sam would come to the house. After a few minutes she realized he had gone back to work and she straightened. Crumbs indicated Sam had been in to make himself a sandwich. She should eat something as well, but she had no appetite and simply stared at the top of the table.

Granny, moaning, hobbled from her room. “Well, what kept you so long? You’d think a good Christian could get home in time to look after her work.”

Lydia clamped her mouth shut and remained quiet.

“What does a body have to do to get fed around here?” Granny plunked down in her chair and glowered at Lydia.

Lydia sighed. There was no point in responding to Granny’s comments. “Would you like a sandwich and some tea?”

“Certainly I would.”

As Lydia worked, hurt edged her thoughts. How could Matt forget her so easily? Though perhaps she should count it as a blessing, seeing as it provided the opportunity for her to enjoy a buggy ride with Reverend Law. His promise to help her seemed to carry a special meaning.

She put Granny’s lunch before her and hurried outdoors to the edge of the hill and, gathering her skirt around her legs, plunked down on the grass.

In the background she heard Sam moving about in the barn and wondered if he waited for Matt’s return with the same mix of emotions she felt. But then he was more familiar with Matt’s habits and perhaps didn’t find this unusual.

It stung to think Matt would treat her this way. She clenched her hands around her knees. Just when she thought things were going well, something went wrong. It seemed to be the story of her life. She longed to bury her head in Mother’s lap and let her calm voice guide her. There was no one else she could turn to for comfort and advice.

God, You are the one I must depend on.

For a long time she sat huddled over her knees staring at the lake until the scents and sounds of nature seeped into her thoughts and she began to relax.

The sound of a wagon brought her stumbling to her feet. Her legs had gone to sleep and it was a few minutes before she could walk. By the time she crested the hill she saw Sam facing Matt, shoulders squared, his fists clenched.

She couldn’t hear Sam’s words but she understood Matt’s reply.

“I had something I had to do. It took longer than I thought.” He turned to walk away. Sam grabbed his arm and jerked him around.

“You left her at the mercy of every Tom, Dick, and Harry in town.” His voice rang across the yard.

Lydia had intended to confront Matt herself, but at Sam’s angry words she drew to a standstill.

“The preacher man said he’d taken her home.” Matt rolled on the balls of his feet.

“That all he said?”

Matt shrugged. “Nope, but I didn’t pay much mind to the rest of it.
