Raman was sitting in his room, twiddling his thumbs. He was not sure how he was going to tackle the challenge at hand. He had called Nithya for an important discussion. He had to convey the hasty decision of his wife to her and he kept pondering as to how his daughter was going to take it……….

It was Parvathy’s Wedding Day and she was getting ready to go to the temple. She opened the bureau to take out the diamond necklace but to her utter shock, the jewel box was missing. She rummaged the bureau for a long time and at last when she was unable to locate it, she called out to her daughter.

When Nithya came and stood in front of her, she asked, “have you taken the jewel box from here ?”

“Yes Ma !” Nithya said, feeling embarrassed at being caught red handed. She repented for not having apprised her mother in advance about the new developments in her life. Slowly, she narrated the whole story to her.

After listening to her, Parvathy was filled with rage and she shouted, “how daring of you to give away the jewels to some loafer on the street ?”

“Ma, please don’t get angry and try to understand what I am saying. He is not a loafer. He is the one and only person in this world who has all the time for me. I feel at home when I am with him. In fact, I share all my joys and sorrows with him and he patiently listens to me despite his busy schedule. He is right now planning to set up a pizza center of his own. Actually, he was trying to obtain loan from different banks for this and did not once request me for any monetary help. It was I who, overwhelmed with empathy for him, gave away the jewels to him….”

“What guts you must be having to do such a thing without my permission ?” Parvathy interrupted her impatiently.

“Ma, it was not my intention to hide anything from you. I was just waiting for an opportune moment— when you are a little relaxed—to talk to you about this. But you were always so busy and tensed with office work and hence I kept procrastinating. It is my ill luck that you have found out before my divulging the facts to you.”

“Don’t justify your action Nithya ! You have let me down….”

Trying to convince her mother, Nithya butted in, “Ma, Giridhar is a hard worker. He has promised to return the jewels shortly and I am sure he will keep his word. Actually…it is for my sake that he is exerting himself so much….he wishes to rise above in the social ladder and hence is opening a pizza center of his own. And Ma…he has proposed to me a few weeks back and said that he would be meeting you shortly in this connection.”

The truth hit her hard like a ton of bricks. That loafer had not only stolen the jewels but also her daughter’s heart.
