Disgruntled, Jerry hung up the phone and stared out the window toward where Roger and Erika were talking desultorily at the redwood table. Roger seemed more relaxed than he had in a while. Though he fidgeted with the band of his wristwatch, there was nothing new in that. Jerry had watched him over the years tug at his earlobes, pull on the drawstring of his scrubs, tap his heel to an unheard beat--the regular gamut of nervous habits that even a relatively laid back young man might have. Roger had a lot of physical energy that was belied by the stillness he kept when he was administering anesthesia. Or maybe the energy just exerted itself when he had a chance to be away from a calling that kept him relatively motionless for such long periods of time.

Erika sat with her arms around her legs, which were bent at the knee up on the bench. She had beautiful long legs but seemed genuinely unconscious of her body at the moment. Her brow was drawn down into a thoughtful frown over strikingly blue eyes. She said something to Roger which caused him to nod and illustrate something on his chest. He was good with his hands, his gestures efficient and effortless. Erika nodded in turn.

Jerry considered rejoining the two of them, but decided against it. Instead he retreated to his room and meditated, after a distracted fashion, for half an hour. Then he heard Roger go into his room and close the door firmly. So much for having another talk with him. But Jerry knew there was plenty of time over the weekend, so he went back downstairs, where he found Erika curled up on the couch with a mystery novel. She smiled up at him as he paused in the doorway.

“I’m going for a walk to the old church up the hill. Are you into your book, or would you care to come along?” he asked.

Erika set down the book immediately and rose energetically to her feet. “I need every bit of outdoor exercise I can get this weekend,” she explained. “Can you wait a minute while I get on slacks and a sweater?”

“Sure.”

The November day still looked sunny but the thermometer had dropped several degrees already. Jerry pulled a light jacket from the rack hanging on the back of the main door. He’d forgotten that he’d left the denim jacket at the cabin and had several times dug through most of his belongings at his condominium in search of it. I must be getting old and forgetful, he thought with a trace of self-pity. No wonder Rachel isn’t interested in me. Who wants a dried up old codger who can’t even manage a full professorship after twenty years in the same institution?

Down the steps clattered Erika in a tight red sweater and black slacks that hugged her thighs in a positively enchanting way. “See? That didn’t take long,” she called to him and a huge grin made her eyes seem to sparkle.
