Chapter Eighteen

“Amy, this looks so nice. I can’t believe how well this furniture turned out. It looks even better than the way I pictured it.” Sarah wandered through the bedroom, lightly touching each piece with the reverence she’d hold for a museum artifact. Amy wished she shared her enthusiasm, but her skin crawled, and the hair stood up on her arms whenever she entered the room. She had to admit the furniture did look better, but those angels on the mirror still creeped her out, and the stain didn’t cover the handprint as Sarah assured her it would. Something just didn’t feel right about any of it, but her mother wouldn’t listen. Sarah stood staring, anticipating Amy’s response.

“Okay, it does look better than it did when you bought it,” Amy said. She couldn’t think of anything else to say, wanting to love it as much as her mother did, but she didn’t.

Amy and her mother had picked out a white comforter set that really stood out against the richness of the dark wood. They’d chosen red pillows and a throw of buttercup yellow to accent the bed, adding a colorful classy touch.

“Well, you must admit it does look better than Winnie the Pooh.”

Amy laughed. “I was just thinking that.”

“You two did a fabulous job,” Amy’s father said, standing in the doorway. “I must say when I first saw that bedroom suite in the garage, I thought your mother had lost her mind, but she knew what she was doing. Very elegant and grown-up.”

“Oh ye of little faith,” Sarah said, smiling. “In spite of all our little mishaps, we got it done and in Amy’s room without any major disasters.”

“Thanks, Dad,” Amy said. “It’ll do. It was a lot of hard work, though. If Jake hadn’t helped finish the headboard, it would still be sitting in the garage.”

Jeff nodded. “Jake’s a good guy, Amy. Is he going to ride in the rodeo this year?”

Amy sat down on the bed and motioned for her father to come into the room. He sat in a small armchair on the other side of the nightstand. “Yes, he’s riding the broncos again and doing the barrel racing. I wish he wouldn’t do the Bronco event, though. I’m really afraid he’ll get hurt. He wants to win that prize money to help with college.” She picked at the fringe on the yellow throw, her eyes darting from one corner of the room to another. She wished she could relax. Amy glanced at Sarah, who still roamed around admiring their handy work. She shook her head and faced her father. “I think he has a good chance of winning, though.”

“He certainly does. He has a way with horses, and his grandfather did too. William Turner’s the reason we have such good horses on this farm. He was quite the horse trader. Jake has the same ability to recognize good horse flesh when he sees it.” Jeff crossed his legs and relaxed in the chair. He picked up
