I was about to enter backstage, when Jimmy popped up right beside me out of nowhere.

“Jimmy!” I pressed my hand against my heart. “You scared me.”

His eyes went to my hand on my chest and flicked back to mine. “You don’t have to be scared of me.”

“Yeah, well, don’t sneak up on people like that and they won’t be scared of you.”

He scowled, crossing his arms over chest. “I just wanted to talk to you.”

“This is definitely not the way to do it.”

His eyes narrowed. “Is this about me asking you for that interview, or something else?”

“This?”

“Your attitude toward me.”

I folded my arms over my chest as well. “I don’t know, Jimmy, you tell me. How would you feel if someone saw you just as a clickbait article?” I didn’t add that he creeped me out with his constant staring and grim face. And what the hell had that been in the cafeteria earlier?

“Clickbait article? That’s not what it was. I just wanted people to hear your side of the story.”

“Oh, yeah? Well, try to be more tactful next time. There are too many tactless journalists already.”

His eyes flared with anger, and he took an abrupt step closer to me. “You don’t get to lecture me on how to be a fucking journalist.”

Whoa. Okay.

My heart began to pound, my eyes going to his clenched hands. Dylan’s words about what he’d done in the newsroom replayed in my head, and I didn’t want to be on the receiving end of things if he lost it now.

“Okay, Jimmy. Whatever you say.” I pushed forward, indicating that this conversation was over.

“I’m not done talking to you.”

Was he serious? I didn’t reply or stop, releasing a long breath once I arrived on stage.

Lori and Stella were in the midst of a staring contest with Lucas, which ended every time with Lori or Stella losing. Lucas’s “resting bitch face,” as Lori had put it, was legendary of sorts, allowing him to win every single time. Lucas waved at me to join them, and I readily approached. This was a game I was good at.

“Okay, Katie. Let’s see what you’ve got,” Lucas told me from where he was sitting cross-legged on the floor.

I relaxed my facial muscles and stared back at him, telling myself to focus on how green his eyes were and not how I wanted to laugh.

“You can do it, Katie,” Stella told me. “Show him he’s not unbeatable.”

“Yeah, win for us,” Lori added, and I could feel my lips were a second away from twitching. I inhaled a deep breath through my nose and kept focusing on the irises of his eyes.

“Hey,” I heard Jason’s voice in the background, where Tallie was sitting with Ling, and my concentration broke instantly.

My lips curled up, and Lucas smacked his knee. “Yeah, babe! You laughed! Who’s the king now, huh?” He winked at Stella, and she blushed.

My smile stretched. Something was brewing between those two.

Just then, my eyes went to Jason, and I caught him looking at my mouth.
