Chapter Nineteen

Michael decided to go leave work early and pick up some take-out Pho before heading home to meet Tess. He had grown fond of the soup the longer they had been together. He texted her to let her know what he was doing, so she didn’t bother to make anything for herself.

Spicy Pho with vegetables and BBQ pork was one of her favorites.

As he waited at the kiosk where he usually picked up the spicy soup, he thought about the case.

As the liaison between King County and the FBI Task Force, Michael would have a bird’s eye view of the case, and could consult with everyone involved, reporting back to Nick, and through him to the DA about the case’s progress.

He felt immense relief that Cassie was found alive, even though she was traumatized from her ordeal and with memory loss of the event. When he worked for the CARD Team, there were two main outcomes: the victim was found dead, or the victim wasn’t a victim at all, and was merely a runaway who left home after a fight with a parent or some other conflict in the family or community — at school, for example. A real abduction usually had a very bad end, with victims dead soon after being abducted. It was a real chance to celebrate when a child was found alive.

Cassie was spared, for some reason. Understanding that reason was key to understanding her captor and his motives. From what McGraw had said, Cassie had been repeatedly raped and tortured, cut with sharp implements and beaten. She had escaped being murdered, for some reason and Michael had to try to understand why if he and the Task Force were going to figure out who her captor was.

Cassie’s memory was key to that, and so he hoped law enforcement would be able to interview her as soon as she was well-enough to manage. What she remembered would be key to catching and convicting her abductor.
