Day 2 - 09:42 Mountain Time

John sawed off another piece of steak from his plate, and stuffed it into his mouth, following it with a chunk of eggs. He and Parker sat in a diner eating breakfast while they tried to find anything of use from Karl’s SIM card.

The hacker nursed a piece of white toast and a cup of heavily creamed and sugared coffee. Parker’s fingers danced over the keyboard of his laptop. He was hoping to find anything that would lead John to the location of his Goddaughter, Emily.

Parker kept the toast clasped between his teeth as he typed out several more strings of commands, initiating a subroutine to pull contacts that met certain criteria and cross checked them with recent calling patterns. He bit off the chunk of buttered bread and dropped it onto the small plate next to his coffee, wiping his hands together.

“That shouldn’t take too long,” he said to John. “There isn’t much on the card, but the algorithms building a plausible call pattern eats up a lot of CPU.”

“I have no idea what you just said, son.”

Parker smiled. “It will ding when it’s done.”

“Right, got it. Like a TV dinner,” John said.

“Uh, yeah. Just like that.” Parker took another bite of toast, speaking again as he chewed. “So what’s the deal with all of this?” he nodded his head toward the laptop.

John jabbed the last piece of steak on the plate with his fork. “A good friend of mine was murdered yesterday. His daughter, my Goddaughter, was kidnapped.”

Parker wanted to ask more questions to start connecting the dots, but he could see that John still struggled with what had happened. He waited for the old soldier to continue in his own time.

“Emily’s mother, Jennifer, works for IntelliSys, in their R&D department,” John said. “It’s pretty obvious that Emily is the leverage for the kidnappers to get their hands on whatever that company is developing.”

“It does seem that way,” Parker said.

“My contact at the CIA is helping out. He tasked the local police with assigning an undercover security detail for her,” John said.

“So, what does the device do anyway?” Parker asked.

John inhaled and sat back. “I don’t know, but from what I was able to piece together, it’s a device that is supposed to be able to decrypt highly secure data at a fast rate.”

The laptop dinged and Parker pulled it closer and started scrolling through the results.

“I’m not sure about the rest of the details, but if they’re brazen enough to kill for it, then it’s got to be something pretty powerful,” John said.

Parker nearly cut him off mid-sentence. “Hey, John, what did you say were the names of the officers providing security for Jennifer?”

“Uh, Wells and Finn,” John said. “Why, are they in danger too?”

“No, not exactly.” Parker paused to make sure what he saw was correct. “It may be nothing, but it looks like Karl received a call from Finn.”

“When?” John sat upright in his seat.

“Uh, yesterday afternoon.”

John’s eyes widened. He bolted up and rushed for the door.
