Chapter Eight

“Having an incubus with us has got to be a good thing,” Phin said.

Connor paced the distance between house and yard. The house itself was something Levi hadn’t been expecting in the middle of the forest. Built of wood, it was aged and sat squarely in an acre of grass. He had a very good view of the house and the meeting given as he was being held immobile in some kind of transparent hold, courtesy of Phin and his sparking fingers.

“He can’t leave here alive,” Micah responded. “But he can’t stay.” The short vampire kept looking his way and he had this glow around him, the resignation obvious in both colour and taste. Levi tensed at the words. It looked as if the blood sucker was looking for his death.

“Can you bind him with the same magic you’re using now?” Connor asked as he paced. “Or make him forget, or something?”

Phin sighed. “It’s only temporary. He’s a Fae, a strong Fae, going back generations. The incubi line has only gotten stronger where magic is concerned. They can overcome most of it.” Phin cast a glance back at Levi. “He’ll be out of that in minutes.”

“So magic can’t hold him,” Connor summarised. “We have to move on and there’s only one thing we can do. Kill him.”

“I’m not killing him,” Phin spluttered.

“Well I’m not,” Connor snapped. “He’s a freaking assassin. You’re the one with the powers.”

Levi heard the derision in Connor’s voice. Evidently he wasn’t a huge fan of magic. Probably part and parcel of the wolf shifters not-doing-well-with-magic thing.

“No one is killing anyone,” Micah interrupted.

Levi struggled a little more at whatever was holding him in place and the invisible bonds loosened a little. Phin was right; nothing was holding him in place.

“Then how do we deal with this, Micah?” Connor said quickly. He stopped his pacing and ended up standing immediately in front of Micah. “We knew they’d send Declan, I told you he was good and the scent spell shit was going to be like a red flag to him. No one listened then, and it seems like no one is listening now.”

“No one needs to die.”

“I can handle Declan,” Connor said tiredly. He pushed his hands through his shaggy dark hair and Micah pulled the wolf shifter in close.

After a few seconds Connor relaxed against the vampire and the white strands around them, and the intense emotions washing over Levi could only mean one thing. Connor’s wolf was mated and it looked as if Micah was the match. There was love there, in twisting white and silver. Levi went from struggling to free as he inhaled the absolute perfection of love. As soon as he was able to he walked the short way to the group and instinctively moved closer to bask in the emotions. No one needed to know what he was doing, but even as he stood there he felt strong, invincible. Phin simply sighed and no one immediately jumped that he had managed to break whatever magic that was holding him.
