CHAPTER 41

Laura was tired of screaming. She cried out anyway, against the searing pain that racked her whole body. Only a pathetic wail came out. Her voice cracked. She had heard Rachel this morning, screaming in the room next door. She also heard the man's voice, shouting at her to shut up. Soon after, the sounds stopped, and Laura heard nothing. Her fear for Rachel was growing.

She had no means to check herself, to know what the man had done to her while she had been unconscious. But she felt dizzy and weak and she had a thumping headache. She didn't understand why her mouth was so dry it made her tongue stick to the palate. But overall, she felt a terrible weakness, and all she wanted to do was close her eyes. The pain kept her awake; she felt it somewhere deep in her abdomen as well as on her wrists and ankles, which she knew were tied. She had tested the ties out, but they were secure. All she had succeeded in doing was bruising her skin and make herself bleed.

She heard a door open behind her. She could only move her head. Her vision swam when she opened her eyes. The room tilted sideways and then slowly corrected itself. She blinked a few more times, but the blurriness didn't improve a great deal. Above her, she could make out a bright white light, and it seemed to be everywhere. There was a strange smell; it reminded her of disinfectant.

She heard a trolley and turned her head to see a man push a hospital gurney against the wall. She couldn't recognise him as he had his back to her. He was leaning over the gurney, checking something. Her heart jumped in her mouth when she saw the naked legs and feet lying on the gurney. She couldn't see the face, but she knew it must be Rachel. She croaked out her name, and at the second calling, the man turned around. A cold fist of fear curled around Laura's heart. She opened her mouth to scream but no sound came. The man wore a blue surgical mask and latex gloves.

Slowly, he advanced towards Laura. She recognised him now, the same man who had abducted them, then injected her. Her veins were frozen with fear and she shook like a leaf in a storm. She looked past him and a quick glance confirmed it was Rachel on the gurney.

The man appeared by her side and looked over her, then up and down her body. He had the air of a scientist examining a curious specimen.

Laura screwed her eyes shut, pulse slamming against her ears. She felt the man move away and opened an eyelid. He was checking her legs, and he walked round the other side of the bed to come alongside her. Laura was terrified, but somehow she found her voice.

"What . . . What have you done to Rachel?"

He didn't reply. The corners of his eyes stretched and she realised he was smiling.
