We bounced along the road for six hours straight with me casting High Heal on the horses to keep them going as we passed numerous towns and villages on the way.
My first words upon seeing the labyrinth were, âOkay, what?â
Right there, where the map said a labyrinth was supposed to be, was a frigginâ mountain.
âThis doesnât make sense,â Nadia said. âThis used to be a cavern. There was never any mountain here.â
She looked at her sister for confirmation, but Lydia seemed out of sorts.
âI can...hear it,â Lydia muttered. She started walking off.
âLetâs follow her,â Nadia said at once. âThis might be spirit-related. Maybe weâll find some answers.â
I decided I didnât want to hike over a mountain and trailed behind Lydia as Nadia suggested. As we traced the base of it, we were attacked by flying monsters, which Brod and Lionel made a contest of hunting again. Lydia, however, hardly reacted and continued on as if in a stupor.
âEstia, can you hear anything?â I asked.
âNo voice specifically,â she replied, âbut I can feel a very strong spiritual presence.â
So we pressed on, guarding Lydia the whole way.
âWhatever happened here must be the cause of all these monsters,â Brod said. âAnd Iâm pretty sure this is the mountain that shoulda been on the border of Merratoni.â
âThen we can expect there to be some nasty monsters, canât we?â I asked.
âStrong ones. Like the one that nearly wiped out the Lineage. Somethingâs goinâ on, but this could be fun.â
Nadia froze upon hearing that her former teachers had nearly died once. I remembered that time. The Lineage of the White Wolf had been carried back to Merratoni, one foot in the grave, and there had been no system in place to heal their conditions at the time, though Iâd ended up saving them. It was crazy to think about how long ago that was.
After an hour of tailing Lydia, I started to smell something sulfuric. Hot springs came to mind first, but there shouldnât have been any of those around. Granted, it had been a long time since Iâd studied up on volcanic groundwater locations, but the vast stretch of forest didnât seem like prime real estate for one.
Still, the characteristic smell was getting to me, and Ketty and Kefin seemed to be in particular pain, being beastpeople. I handed them noseplugs.
All of a sudden, bursts of steam erupted from the ground, clouding our vision. We must have been near a geyser.
âBe careful, everyone,â I called out. âArea Barrier canât protect you against heat. Donât burn yourselves.â
Lydia knelt down and languidly put her hand to the ground. A crimson magic circle appeared around her, summoning a small bird engulfed in fire.
