Notes
INTRODUCTION
1. Kind of. Sort of. The world of health is tricky, itâs nuanced, and itâs filled with asterisks. Weâll get to the many disclaimers in a bit.
2. I have no idea if this last one is true, but other health books seem to claim it with no evidence, so I will, too.
DRINK
1. But this is true of everything, including water.
2. Sadly, thereâs something else beer is rich in: carbs. Another trade-off. If youâre drinking a steady diet of beer, the carbs make it that much harder to drop weight.
3. Letâs ignore, for the moment, that 1) Thereâs some doubt on whether he actually said this; and 2) Hemingway was an alcoholic who stuffed a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
VICE AND DIVERSIONS
1. Correlation versus causation alert. This just shows an âassociation.â It could be that well-adjusted kids tend to gravitate toward video games in moderation. As far as epidemiological studies go, this oneâs pretty loosey-goosey.
2. So how to square this with the idea that multitasking can be bad for you? This sounds like a classic health paradox. But the two might be compatible. Instead of darting back and forth between work and the web, focus on one thingâand only one thingâfor a sustained period of time, then switch.
BAD MIND-SETS
1. What if youâre not sure if youâre an extrovert or introvert? Then weâre in the same boat. Whenever Iâve taken introvert-extrovert personality quizzes I split my answers right down the middleâI crave my alone time, but I also talk too much at dinner parties, which, technically, makes me what the experts call an ambivert.
2. Itâs time to create a drinking game. Every time you see âin moderation,â you should drink. Because drinking is healthy for you. In moderation.
(ALMOST) EVERYTHING ELSE
1. Score a point for organic food. Maybe overall it doesnât make a difference for most people, but there are certainly exceptions. So much of health is case by case.
2. Kahneman won a Nobel Prize and is one of the founding fathers of decision-making theory and behavioral economics. His book is magnificent.
MORE FOOD
1. Just because something âlights up the happy zones of the brainâ does not make it good for us. Something else that lights up the happy zone: cocaine.
