A STORM COULD be raging outside. So what! All I could feel was what blew through my tiny window. An earthquake occurred the other day; a slight shift of my chair was all I felt.

Welcome to my world! Life as I knew it and lived it, all encompassed in this tiny sixty-four square-foot space, a safe little cocoon that bore witness to my dreams, joys, sorrows and the everyday mundane activities of life. Nestled inside my tiny room was a teeny tiny bathroom, which housed the washing machine, along with everything a normal bathroom had.

It was Sunday, the one day of the week when I decided that in this little world of mine, noon was too early for daybreak or even phone calls. A hot meal? Now that was another matter. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I stopped moving and slowly processed the filtered noise from the world outside. I grabbed my keys and mobile phone and turned off the radio.

I was running on only a few hours of sleep; what I really needed was a cup of coffee. Unfortunately, my room was ill-equipped for coffee-making. I would have to make my way across to the kitchen, which meant encountering the people who rented me my room, something I could not possibly do without brushing my teeth and grabbing a shower first. Come to think of it, I had never left the room without at least showering.

I could have just brushed my teeth and slipped out to a nearby café for a cup of coffee. Decisions, decisions. By the time I decided what to do, half an hour had gone by and I just gave up on the idea of coffee altogether. My mind turned towards other things I needed to do. Laundry. Tidying up the room. Aptly called chores, because I only had Sundays to get them done.

I headed into the bathroom with an armful of clothes, eager to get the laundry into the washing machine. I then went about cleaning the room and putting things in order. To complete the process, I needed a broom and mop, which I did not have in my room. It seemed that I couldn’t put off stepping outside forever.

As I approached my closed door, the smell of sambrani tickled my nose. Sambrani usually meant a prayer was being conducted, but this just seemed wrong, as no one performs prayers in the middle of the day. However, what if I was wrong and there really was a prayer in progress? I did not want to intrude. I gave up on the idea and immediately regretted not switching off the TV and radio much sooner. This was so awkward.

The homeowners seemed to have returned to the flat earlier than usual. It had been more than two weeks since I last ran into them. Last Sunday, I even stayed over at my friend Uma’s house. At the very least, I should say hello. I pasted a big ready smile on my face, opened my door and stepped out.
