Chapter 15

“HERE, how ’bout this one?” Bryan wasn’t about to give up.

“I don’t think so,” I told him.

“Sweetness,” he laughed, “you didn’t even look at it.” Dangling from his fingertips, Bryan held a questionable pair of pants. Not my taste or style by far. I shook my head before taking one last look at them, if only to indulge him.

Bryan’s fashion suggestions, particularly what kind of clothes I should wear, traversed into the raw and overly exposed much farther than my tastes dared. But that’s his flavor, and it suits him well. For me, faded jeans with a simple T-shirt hit the mark every time.

As mentioned earlier, Doug had offered to treat me to some quick shopping before our trip to the Field, and booze-boy tagged along after sobering up some and discarding his knitted cap. For most of the afternoon, I played victim to Bryan’s teasing or his touchy-feely attention, which surfaced whether he was drunk or not. It was safe to say that “persistent, playful tease” was Bryan’s middle name—a little long-winded but accurate to the letter.

A tiny silver bell jingled atop an old, glass-paned door, when we entered this quaint shop hidden among the city’s architectural giants. The owners named the shop Twelve Twenty-Seven, based on its street address. Doug swore that this store had the best clothes; it was a personal favorite of his as far as shops went.

A human-owned establishment, it catered to a wide variety of needs for both men and women, with an overstocked inventory that was stacked from floor to ceiling. Doug had given me complete carte blanche, which was very generous of him, and maybe a bit reckless too. So Bryan and I had been extremely busy rummaging through a bunch of bins and racks.

Shopping held no appeal for James. His level-headedness took him elsewhere to arrange safe passage for the three of us. He managed to slip in a few more negative comments before we left the loft. He still wasn’t all too keen on the idea of searching for Shaye, but in his heart he was bound to help Doug, who in turn was helping me.

As cerebral and aloof as James was, he did value his brothers’ safety to the highest degree. Even after briefly meeting him, I clearly perceived he would never compromise their well-being over his own. After shifting into the Expanse, the emotional glue that held their small family together had solidified even more, making them stronger, closer, and more able to survive the unpredictable nature of this place. And I’ll admit that I did enjoy the feeling of their family glue bonding to me as well.

“Hey, here ya go, Sweetness.” Again Bryan held up something totally inappropriate. He just couldn’t resist being an ass. This time he had found a scrap of fabric that wouldn’t have covered my hand.

“What is that?”

“It’s a pair of underwear, goofball,” he scoffed, acting surprised by my undergarment dimness.

I let him down easy.

“Your loss,” he said with a shrug.

Doug managed to stay out of our playful exchange.
