THIRTY-FOUR

Lexi stormed back to her office with a sour taste in her mouth.

What the hell just happened?

Ed Harlow was supposed to be an ally, but he’d just humiliated her in front of her whole team. Whatever his prowess as a profiler – which she had yet to see – he certainly wasn’t blessed with people skills. She dropped into her chair and flipped up the lid of her laptop. She could solve this case without his input. After all, she’d studied profiling with the best in the world, and if she had one ounce of Harlow’s arrogance, she would never have bothered to consult with someone else.

There were plenty of emails that needed her attention, but she was too riled to concentrate on them. Current mood: furious – and she didn’t need that bleeding over into the rest of her work. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself. If Ed Harlow thought he had free rein to blunder about inside her case, with access to her most personal memories, he had another think coming.

Calm down.

Breathe.

Her mobile sounded. She glanced at the screen, prepared to just let it ring. But it was Mort.

‘Don’t say I never do anything for you,’ he said, without bothering to greet her.

‘I wouldn’t. What have you got?’ She took care to moderate her voice so he wouldn’t guess her mood.

‘The body from Chequer’s Wood. When I undressed it, I discovered a tattoo on the left shoulder blade. A Thai Sak Yant tattoo.’

‘Sacred script. And?’

‘And it could be a match – in Josh Pendleton’s file, it mentions a Sak Yant tattoo. On his left shoulder blade, from a holiday in Thailand. It’s not certain yet. I need to get hold of a photo of Josh’s tattoo to compare them. But I thought you’d want to know.’

‘Brilliant, Mort – you’re a star.’ Looked like her suspicions about the body’s identity would be confirmed.

‘A pint’ll do it.’

‘Sure, when I’m next up your way.’

‘Could be sooner than you think, Lexi – I’m about to start the autopsy, but I could wait a bit if you want to observe.’

‘Count me in.’

She slammed shut her laptop and grabbed her bag.

‘Tom?’ she shouted as she passed the door of the incident room. ‘We’ve got a tentative ID. Mort’s about to do the PM.’

She heard his footsteps behind on the stairs as she ran down, and he caught her up in the car park.

‘I’ll drive,’ she said. ‘We’ll get there quicker.’

She told him about the tattoo as she pulled out onto the ring road. ‘I want to see it for myself. Call Ridhi and get her to check Pendleton’s social media accounts for a picture we can use to match it.’

Of course, no matter how identical the tattoos, they’d have to wait for DNA analysis to make the final call on the ID, but a good match would be good enough for Lexi. It made sense to her that the body belonged to Pendleton, though she had yet to see why their man would have murdered Lucy’s boyfriend.
