Chapter 29

The evening continues, and I try to engage in the conversation at the table, but barely get out two sentences. I’m usually a chatty person, so my husband keeps looking at me clearly wondering what the hell is wrong. Despite Christian’s friendly demeanor at the table, I still can’t shake the weird feeling I have. Then he says something that sends me deeper into orbit.

“I’d like to order something special to help celebrate this wonderful evening,” says Christian. “How about I get us all some champagne? Nothing says success like a little champagne.”

What did he just say?

Travis always talked about champagne being the sign of ultimate success. Gripping the edge of the table with my fingertips to steady myself, I take a deep breath as the waiter approaches to take our order. I’m so out of sorts at this point that I randomly choose the first dinner item on the menu.

My husband notices I’m acting weird, because he leans over to me again.

“What’s wrong?” he whispers into my ear. “You ordered fish. You hate fish.”

I force a smile. “I’m trying something new. Getting out of my rut. I’m fine . . . really.”

He turns back to the other two, and the three of them continue talking about energy while I try to make some sense of this seemingly surreal coincidence. By the time our waiter brings our dinner, I’m heading into an emotional tailspin.

“Abbie, you want another glass of wine?” Jason says, trying to get my attention while the waiter waits for my reply.

I look up from my trance and nod as the waiter disappears.

“Believe it or not, having grown up in the Midwest,” says Christian, “I’ve never been to this part of Connecticut before. It’s beautiful. Sophie and I got up here early today and had a chance to drive around town. Eastport is a pretty little town and a reasonable commute to Manhattan. You picked a great spot to raise your family.”

I continue examining this stranger with the beard, who doesn’t seem to notice my scrutiny or doesn’t care. Jason nudges me under the table with his knee and gives me a ‘what’s going on?’ look.

“We love it here,” my husband says, moments later, while squeezing my hand and giving me a nod.

“It’s a great place to raise kids,” I say, jumping into the conversation while polishing off the remainder of my Chablis.

“Sophie and I got a good vibe the minute we pulled into town,” says Christian. “It’s country-ish, but still has a bustling downtown. You don’t feel like you’re out in the sticks at all. I heard you have great schools, too. We might consider moving here when we have kids.”

“You’re married?” my husband says, clearly surprised. “I didn’t realize you two were a . . .”

Christian raises up both of his hands with great flourish. “Sophie came to work at RDV about two and a half years ago. She’s been an amazing contributor to the success of the company. We couldn’t have done it without her.
