He tries to pull away but I find myself craving the connection we have. “Stay.” I say. “Stay inside me. Tell me something.”

“What?”

“Anything.”

“You want to know my secret?” His voice is wry. We are magically at ease with each other now.

“I’m pretty sure you just showed it to me. Several times.”

Logan laughs and pulls me closer. We lie on the floor of his playroom with the remnants of our clothes pulled across us. His arm wraps protectively around my shoulders and holds me close. Our naked bodies, sticky and well used, rested together in peace.

“I don’t give a damn about politics,” he says. Logan traces the curve of my breasts with a finger.

“Then why run? Why put yourself through the media scrutiny, the hullabaloo?”

“It’s all Gabriel. He owns me, Jess.”

“Gabriel?”

“He caught me in the act. Took photos. There’s this place in San Francisco. It’s just called the House. Very discreet. I could never have any professional, y’know, submissive visit me up here.”

“Too far a drive?”

“People talk. If not the gardeners, then the cooks. If not the cooks, the carpenters. And even if my entire staff stays quiet I still have to worry about the girl.”

“So you found a place.”

“I found a place. It wasn’t perfect, but it was closer to what I needed than anything else had been. I told myself I’d just try it once. Get it out of my system.”

I lift my arm and show off the leather cuff still attached. “Well, that seemed to have worked just fine.”

Logan laughs, shakes his head. “It didn’t go the way I’d planned. No one knew who I was there. I wore a disguise, this Venetian mask, like I was going to a masquerade ball. The anonymity was intoxicating. To be suddenly free of all the scrutiny I live with? I went wild.”

“How many times did you visit this House?”

“Three times.”

“That’s not so many.”

“A week. For months.”

“Wow.”

“I half fell in love with one of the women there, too, this feisty switch named Carissa. I was going to tell her who I was, see if we could move beyond the professional relationship into something more personal. And that’s when Gabriel found me. He’d tailed me the entire time.”

“How did he know?”

“I have no idea. But even that first visit to check the place out, he was there. Across the street in some bushes, taking photos. I have copies of them all. He has hundreds of shots of me dressed in fetish clothes, walking in the front door.”

“How does that get you here? To politics?”

“It’s Gabriel’s passion. He sees himself as a master manipulator. The smartest guy in the room. I don’t know if it’s just a chip on his shoulder from growing up my father’s illegitimate son, or if he’s just simply a sociopath. His head is a mystery to me.”

“So you do what he says.”

“Like a trained rat.”

“Otherwise he leaks those photos and ruins your life.”

“Exactly.”

I kiss him again, unsure of what to say. I know who he is now, but that’s just made everything so much more complicated.
