So I get a formal tour of the Earl and Countess’ private rooms – a huge state sitting-room, a regular-sized lounging room with evidence of much reading activity, a stocked kitchen, two bathrooms, three more bedrooms, and the master bedroom. I keep my senses trained, but I do not detect the presence of the Marquis and his family again.

Where do they go?

“So there you are, Paul. You now know the whole house, and some of its less likely occupants, it would seem. I seriously would like to have a discussion with the original family who lived here, so if you happen to come across them, you wil broker a meeting, won’t you?”

“Certainly.”

The Countess smiles. I have been dismissed by her too.

“I think I’l go for a walk,” I explain.

“Then I’l see you at dinner,” replies the Countess. “You wil be here for dinner, won’t you?”

“Yes, I shal .”

“Good. I’l reserve a place next to me. I would like to pick your brains, if I may. I am assured that they are plentiful.”
