Dear Sophia,

My mother and father are visiting. I love my mother very much, but I side with my father when it comes to balls and soirees. I’d rather go to the theatre or have a small dinner party than join the throng of over-dressed party goers. But we are no match for Agnes Eliot, and so my father and I put our heads down and endure.

The worst of it is that Mother thinks she has found a match for me. I hope I’m never too critical of the female sex, but the girl she intends for me is the most vacuous human I have ever met. I don’t think she has a thought in her brain beyond what she is wearing or what she will wear next. I’m quite serious. We sat down together, upon my mother’s insistence, to have some refreshment between dances. She said only three things to me, in a breathy, hurried way as if she knew I had no interest but could not keep her thoughts in.
