Chapter Twenty-Two

“What was the name you left for the reservation?” Sarah pushed her new brown hair over her right shoulder. The makeup applied in a hurry was overdone, but she could live with it for an hour or two. “Will that name stick?”

“Of course.” Disco eased to a stop on the side of the road, then killed the engine. “Why wouldn’t our reservation stick? I have a credit card in that name and a driver’s license.”

“I know. I’m just pissed that we have to go under this disguise.”

He watched her for a long moment. “Not your style?”

“If I’m entering a building, I walk through the front door and deal with it. This isn’t about my ego. It’s about doing the right thing with your chin held high.” She stared out the windshield at nothing in particular. “If wearing a disguise—this wig, these clothes—gets the job done, then so be it. Otherwise, pretending to be someone else just feels like a lie.”

“You’ve never worn a wig?”

She thought back to when she covered her hair with a bandanna, but that was different.

“I’ve dyed my hair before if that’s the same thing.” She glanced over at him. “I mean, to disguise myself. So there’s that.”

“Nothing wrong with being upfront when dealing with your enemy. But this time, those guys are too trained, and there’s too many of them to walk in the front door, guns swinging.”

“Yeah, and I don’t want to do that either. Too many people would die senselessly, and we still have no idea what their intentions are except wanting to play a game by telling me my sister is still alive.”

Disco clucked his tongue. “The way I see it is we would need cartel enforcers to take over the hotel if we weren’t going in like this.”

Sarah nodded, then grabbed the door handle. “Let’s do this and find out what we can about them, then get back to Amanda and Brody.”

After exiting the Hummer, Sarah waited for Disco to come around to her, then she held onto his arm. Playing a couple, she had to be in the role all the way to the front of the hotel until they got into their room.

“Will those kids be okay with your hair guy?”

“Of course. He’s ex-special forces, turned hairdresser. I’ve got the guys who missed Darwin at the airport on their way to relieve him. Nothing will happen to those kids.”

As they strode along the sidewalk on Front Street, her gut twisting at the knowledge that Darwin was missing now, too, no one paid them any extra attention. Near the front of the Royal Oak Hotel, in the pickup and drop-off area, the ambulances were gone now.

“Wonder what happened earlier,” Sarah mumbled for Disco to hear.

“Hope it has nothing to do with the people you know.”

“If it does, screw this disguise. I’m hurting someone.”

“Just try to stay calm as long as you can. We need to get in and get out, and in between, learn as much as we can without hurting anyone.
