CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Balancing precariously on the draining board with one foot in the sink, Edwina had her binoculars trained on Gibbet Cottage.

‘Giles, there are two men on the roof next door, poking spikes into the thatch and I can see at least six more through their living room window and a whole host of them in the garden. They’re wearing those white coverall suits with hoods. What do you suppose they’re up to?’

Giles was packing his rucksack with food, ready for yet another trip abroad. ‘According to Peter who heard it from Dick in the pub, they’re pest control operatives. It seems Dick and Rosie are infested with rats and cockroaches and various other unpleasant creatures, including bats. They’ve had to move into Hangman’s Inn while the place is being fumigated.’

‘Well, I hope they’re not fumigating the bats. They’re a protected species. I may have to start a protest campaign.’

‘I wish you’d get down off there. Someone will see you.’

Edwina climbed down reluctantly. ‘I’m a concerned member of the public. I’m entitled to know what’s going on. What if the pests spread to our house?’ She stood watching him pack, passing him things from the kitchen table. ‘I wonder where Marcus has gone. Millie says he’s left her. You and Peter are very thick with him; do you think he has?’

‘No, course not. He’s away on business, that’s all. Millie’s a bit emotional, even on a good day. She imagines all sorts of daft things. Marcus is a good bloke; he wouldn’t just push off and leave her.’

Edwina was thoughtful for quite a long time. ‘Giles, you wouldn’t leave me, would you? Not without telling me why.’

Giles stopped packing and looked closely at her. ‘Of course I wouldn’t leave you, Weena. What’s brought all this on?’

She looked guilty. ‘I was emptying the pockets of your jacket before taking it to the cleaners. I wasn’t spying on you, honestly. Anyway, I found your driving licence and as I was pulling it out, it fell open. Giles, it said you’ve been licensed to drive an LGV for over a year. That’s a lorry, isn’t it? You must have taken a test but you never told me. Why would you want to drive a truck? You’re a film producer.’

Giles answered almost at once but the slight hesitation, just for a heartbeat, told her he was lying. ‘It’s all the heavy film equipment, Weena. It needs to be transported abroad and we couldn’t always get a qualified driver so I thought it would be more cost effective if I could drive it myself. I didn’t tell you because you’re not usually interested in that kind of thing.’

‘So there’s nothing wrong, then?’

‘Nothing for you to worry about.’ He kissed her. ‘Now, I must dash or I’ll miss the ferry. I’ll be home in a couple of days.’

After he’d gone, Edwina stood looking out of the window at the men sifting minutely through Dick and Rosemary’s lawn with rakes. They must be infested with moles as well.
