CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I spent the next day mostly on my own at work. I took up an empty board room and worked on my laptop. I didn’t particularly feel like spending a lot of time with Graham, besides he was in meetings most of the day.

The fact that he’d spent the previous night on the couch made it feel like our relationship, whatever it was, had taken a major step backwards. My conversation with Elizabeth still bothered me and I wanted more answers than just those Graham had given me.

Charlie, I thought suddenly. She had slipped me her phone number right before Graham and I left their house on Saturday. I punched her number into my cell and waited nervously.

“Hello?” she answered on the third ring.

“Charlie, uh, hey…This is Emma—”

“Emma! I’m so glad to hear from you, what’s up?”

“Well…I wondered if maybe tonight you would be free for drinks?” Shit, she’s pregnant! Stupid! “No - not drinks, I mean. You’re probably busy. I just - I’m sorry I bothered you.”

“Emma!” She was laughing. “It’s okay, I’d love to meet up with you after work for drinks. I’ll just stick with water.”

“Really?” Relief washed over me.

“Sure. I’ll meet you at the office and we’ll go from there, okay?”

“Okay, see you tonight.” I hung up and put my head on the desk.

“You okay?” Ryley said as he walked in and sat down across from me.

“Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”

Ryley crossed his arms over his chest and looked me over for a moment. “It’s about him, isn’t it?”

My face burned and I looked away. I didn’t want to talk about Graham with Ryley.

“Em.” He reached across the table and squeezed my hand. “It’s okay, I get it. You like him.”

I finally looked up at him and nodded slightly. “I think I do.”

I could see a little disappointment flash in his eyes before he quickly recovered and grinned broadly. “He’s a lucky son of the bitch, I hope he knows that.”

Oh, how I wished I could get rid of the awkwardness with Ryley—take away all of his feelings for me.

“I…I actually don’t know what he thinks about me, Ryley.”

“Well, whatever’s going on between you two, it’s going to be okay. But if things with Billionaire Galloway don’t work out, I’ll be around,” he finished with a wink.

Oh, Ryley. “Thanks,” I said softly.

After Ryley left I tried to get back to work but my mind was constantly floating back to Graham…and Elizabeth. I still didn’t know what to think or feel. But I knew things didn’t feel right and my gut was usually right.

After work was over I packed up my stuff and headed down to the lobby, thankfully avoiding Graham on the way. I quickly spotted Charlie.

“Emma, I’m so glad you called!” Charlie said.

“Thanks so much for meeting with me.”

“Charlie, I didn’t expect to see you tonight,” Graham’s voice came from behind me. Shit.

“Emma and I decided to go out for some drinks,” Charlie said lightly, looping her arm through mine.

My eyes flicked to Graham’s. He was staring intently at me.
