Chapter Thirteen
The Coast Guard took Sara to a hospital in Anchorage. Her arm was put in a sling, and the doctor bandaged her ankle with a stern admonition to keep her weight off it as long as possible. People came and spoke to her, checked her vital signs, shone lights in her eyes, but they were phantoms as far as she was concerned. They said they wanted to keep her overnight for observation and she shrugged. When they asked if she had someone she could stay with to monitor her concussion, Sara said no. They admitted her for twenty-four hours and left her alone in the dark, almost too-warm hospital room.
She drifted in and out of nightmares, fevered dreams where her crew reached out of the churning waves and grabbed at her clothes as the Coast Guard tried to free her. She woke from these dreams with a stifled cry, clutching at her sheets until the room stopped spinning and she remembered where she was. The hospital was eerie. Her room was dark, but a streetlight shone through the window and the hall was still dimly lit. She felt like a little kid who had been sent to bed while her parents stayed up late.
Sara managed to pull herself out of bed and used a crutch to go to the bathroom. She didn't think she needed the crutch, since her ankle didn't feel that bad, but she didn't want another lecture from that damn doctor. She stayed in the bathroom a lot longer than necessary, unable to find the will to move, just staring at the ugly wallpaper in front of the toilet in a daze.
She was alive. She had survived. Leon, Andy, the skiffman â Robert. His name had been Robert â were all dead. As was Kavik. Every time her thoughts circled around to Kavik, she broke down. She was no longer haunted by his ruined face, but the knowledge he was dead was almost too much for her to bear. He had been her best friend. He had accepted her as a deckhand, and never implied she couldn't do the work.
Kavik, dead. It was almost too insane to believe. Kavik couldn't die. Especially not in a storm. Especially not in a storm that Sara had survived. If Kavik was dead, then everyone should be dead.
Sara heard the door of her hospital room open, soft footsteps on the tile outside the bathroom. The nurse or whoever moved to the edge of the small wardrobe. They obviously saw the empty bed and quietly called, "Sara?"
She realized she had been in the bathroom for almost half an hour. She wiped her eyes, used the crutch to stand up, and tugged her pajama pants back up one-handed. She left the light on when she opened the bathroom door and stepped out into the dark room. She didn't know who she expected to see â a random nurse, some doctor â but her breath caught in her throat when Elena turned to face her.
