A tiny bit of my margarita sloshes past the salt-coated rim as our glasses make contact, producing that beautiful bell-like sound of a good toast. I gaze across the table into Andrewâs sincere green eyes. I donât know how this can possibly be the same Drew Clark who pulled my pigtails on the playground and caused me deep, traumatic mortification on a variety of occasions during my formative years. Heâs so charming, so articulateâ¦so passionate. Heâs shared with me his plans for getting Delmarva Art Connection up and running in the next month, and Iâm floored at the amount of thought heâs put into it.
I think the waitress has been standing at our table for a full thirty seconds before we realize it, our toast was so captivating. She looks happy, like sheâs witnessed something heartfelt, and itâs seeped in through her pores. âWhat can I get you two?â she asks in a high, bubbly voice.
âIâll take the veggie fajitas,â I answer, not even looking at the menu. There are only a few options for me that donât involve decaying animal flesh.
âYou know what? I think Iâll try the veggie fajitas too!â Drew decides, closing his menu with a sense of finality.
âReally? You donât have to do that on my behalf. Get whatever you want!â
âNo, I think theyâll be great!â He pats his stomach. âIâve been trying to watch what I eat a little bit, and I figure if I eat veggies, itâll make up for all the margaritas I plan to consume!â
âGood point!â I concur.
Dinner is full of glittering laughter and funny stories from our past. I tell him I feel like weâre talking about two old friends, not ourselves. âDo you feel like that too?â I ask as he finishes off the last of his second margarita.
He considers it for a moment. âI see little flashes of that girl you were, you know? The competitiveness, your dry sense of humor, how you notice everything â I definitely see all that. But youâre also a lot more self-assured and, wellâ¦â His eyes travel from my forehead down to the table, soaking in the view of me in my strapless paisley dress. âYou do look a little more grown-up now.â
I can tell he really wanted to say something else.
âHey, you want to get out of here?â he changes the subject. âMaybe walk down to the beach?â
I glance down at my phone to check the time. Holy crap! Itâs almost 9:30. How did we spend two hours in here already? Itâs got to be dark by now.
Sure enough, when we hit the boardwalk ten minutes later, dusk has left swaths of lavender and rose streaks behind us, and the skies over the ocean are now freckled with stars. The moon lazes around a clump of thin, wispy clouds as it gently strokes the waves crashing onto the silvery shore. The heat of the day has subsided, and thereâs a nice breeze coming in off the water. When we hit
