Chapter Sixteen

Lily threw back the covers and sat up on the edge of the bed. Four thirty in the morning and she had been lying awake for over an hour. Putting on her slippers she went into the bathroom and drank a glass of water. Then she went into the living room and pulled back the curtain.

With only the faint illumination of a streetlamp, the street was dark and deserted at this hour. She let the curtain drop and returned to her bed, pulling the down comforter up to her chin, brushing her breasts and triggering memories of making love with Vickie.

What was wrong? She never had trouble sleeping. She knew what was wrong. Her carefully arranged life had been disrupted since the day she’d seen the woman in the Continuing Education Office. At first it was enjoyable and interesting to meet her over a drink together after rehearsal. Christmas Eve together had been a comfortable and pleasurable time. It had been touching how Julie tried to please her and show her the house she obviously loved. But why had she asked Julie to stay with her the night of the snowstorm? Julie probably could have made it home safely in her Jeep. And why had she gotten in bed with her? She told herself it was because she felt sorry for her when she learned of the horrible fire she had survived and wanted to comfort her. Face it, she thought, you really wanted to take her in your arms and make love to her. No, that wasn’t true. Julie had been so distraught it wouldn’t have been the right time. For all she knew, when Julie went to Milwaukee it might have been to see another woman, or a man. Was it because she was older that she was hesitant to be the one to initiate a relationship with Julie?

With Vickie it had been different. Almost immediately Vickie had declared her intentions and Lily had been eager. Before Vickie, Lily had had a brief affair in graduate school, which ended when the woman decided that she preferred men. At her last college in Minnesota there had been Janet, the tennis coach. Their affair lasted barely a year when Janet chose a job offer in Texas over Lily.

Now, there was a new complication. Lately Vickie had been making advances, signaling that she wanted to resume their relationship. As attractive as Vickie was, that was not going to happen. The desire, affection and passion she had once felt for Vickie was gone forever. The hurt of her betrayal still remained.

As she lay there she resolved to get her life back to the comfortable routine she had been following before she met Julie.

Finally she fell asleep.
