Sam graduated from the pilot training program and soon was co-piloting cargo flights within Egypt. Once he was above the clouds, he felt like there was nothing between him and God, if there was a God, and he still wasn’t sure about that. For him, flying was the most fantastic feeling in the world. Nothing else mattered when he was up in that plane. He was one with the universe and felt that excitement every time he was high in the sky. Now that he was a pilot, people treated him with respect and deference.
Every few weeks he sent money home to his family, who desperately needed it. Earning a living in Kashmir had become extremely difficult. His parents would depend on him for most of their income until things improved politically. Sam didn’t make much, but it had to be enough for all of them.
Life in Cairo turned out to be fun. Sam made many new Egyptian friends and often went to clubs and parties and relished the dancing, drinking, and flirtations with foreign girls. The European girls were much more fun to talk to than the Egyptian girls. The Western women wore sexy clothes, and made provocative comments. He liked spending time with women from Europe or America; they were more open and freewheeling. The Muslim women were demure and more guarded, while the European girls were bold and sassy and put it all out there. He liked that. It was hot.
There was a new sensation in downtown Cairo called an ‘internet café’ that had become very popular with the locals. You could pay to use their computers and use this new thing called the internet. He tried this internet a few times and soon realized it might be the way to find his wife. Internet computer time was expensive, but worth it and several times a week he went to the café to search for any information he could find that might lead him to Trina.
It had been more than six years since he had any contact with his wife, but he still wanted to find out what happened to her. Nothing had changed for him over the years, rather his feelings had intensified. He needed to know if she was alive and if she was, where was she? Why didn’t she come back for him and was she with another man? He had to know the truth.
One day, he paid his money for an hour of internet time and pulled up a Lycos search. He typed in ‘Trina Holmgard’, something he had done countless times before. Most of the results he got were in Swedish or Danish, and he couldn’t make out what they said. He tried ‘Katrina Holmgard’. He got more of the same, but this time there was an obituary of a Katrina Holmgard in Minnesota in America. His heart beat faster when he saw the listing, only to realize, somewhat relieved, the obituary was for a Katrina Holmgard who was eighty-four years old and died of heart failure.
