My friend,

I hope you’ll forgive the brevity of this letter and the unconventional manner by which I’ve sent it. I hope, also, that you won’t find my intrusion into this matter out of place. Our Affirmation doesn’t often justify involvement in such things, but this case is out of the ordinary.

Jori recently came back from a year’s retreat with the hermits near Andarre. When we talked last week, she told me of a troubling movement among the sen davannat there, and that brought to mind your letter of several months ago. A large number of our visionary brothers and sisters have begun to report the same visions of war and disaster your letter mentioned, and some of them have left the hermitages in the last few months and are traveling north. Jori hasn’t been able to learn their intentions. Other sen davannat have begun preaching to the Shelter folk nearby, speaking of the coming of war. So far none of them seems to have left the Andarre area, but rumors are flying here at Setneva and elsewhere.

I’ve been contacting friends all through this past week, and almost everyone who has contact with sen davannat has similar stories. Several of us have formed a network to collect accounts of these visions and keep watch on the movement. There’s real potential for trouble here, Tamar. Jori gave me a summary of what she heard from one of the preachers, and it sounds as though two centuries and the Affirmation itself have dissolved like mist. The imagery is all of fire and struggle, and it’s not meant as metaphor.

So there it is. I wanted you to know about this, partly because you’re already involved in it to some extent and partly because you live on the edge of the north country. Beyond that, I’m told that Mirien has become a base for the Halka response, and I would like you to bring what’s happening to the attention of the sen Halka there. I know this is most irregular. I feel sure you’ll understand my reasons, though.

Please contact me as soon as you can and let me know what you think of all this. Any responses or questions the sen Halka might have would be more than welcome. I remain, as always,

Your brother in Halvedna,

Barra Johanan
