The men who had been following Edwin wondered why he didn’t come out with his daughter. They knew she was in there. But that wasn’t their problem. That was the problem of the men who were supposed to have been watching the girl.

The men following Edwin rolled slowly past the parked car with their accomplices in it. They rolled down the window and talked as they drove by. “He doesn’t have the girl. She must still be in there.”

One of the men in the parked car put in a call to the guy standing a few feet from Mr. Bogarti. The guy received the bad news with a hard face. He whispered something into Mr. Bogarti’s ear, whose face now mirrored his own. Michael stiffened momentarily. He had a disappearing preacher, and now it seemed he had a disappearing girl. He whispered back to the man.

The guy sitting in the parked car received his orders and looked up at the house.
