Chapter Twenty-Three

In a coffee shop on a small side road off Epping High Street, Harvey sat at a corner table with his back to the wall. He was waiting for Julios to arrive to discuss their plans. The location of their meets always varied. It was a stipulation of Julios to avoid regular patterns.

The tables inside the coffee shop were empty. Rush hour had been and gone, and the few customers that did come through the door ordered takeouts.

A few minutes passed before Julios’ old Subaru drove past the first time. Harvey counted down from sixty, picturing Julios performing his routine check of the surroundings before the car passed by once more and parked facing the fastest way out of town. Julios ambled into the coffee shop as if time would wait for him, noting every person in sight with a discreet flick of his eyes. Constant voyeurism was another of Julios’ habits born from years of looking over his shoulder.

The big man stepped up to the door wearing his long overcoat, thick pants and boots. He ignored the welcoming smile of the waitress and took a seat on the table next to Harvey’s, also facing the door with his back to the wall.

They both ordered coffee, which was delivered with effortless manners and minimal disturbance. Menus were placed in front of the two men, but the waitress didn’t offer the special of the day or push for a food order. Instead, she left her only two customers to talk in near silence, their gestures filling the gaps between their sparse words.

“They got to Donny,” said Harvey.

A frown formed on Julios’ brow.

“Either Thomson or Stimson. I didn’t get a look,” Harvey continued. “Donny’s in a bad way and John is mad as hell. He’s sending him away and faking the funeral. Give it six months and he’ll be back with a new identity.”

A sideways stare from Julios asked another silent question before his eyes returned to monitoring the traffic outside.

“I think it was Thomson. An act of revenge.”

Julios nodded.

“Which makes tomorrow’s deal slightly more complex,” said Harvey.

The statement caught Julios’ attention.

“But it’s still on. John sent me the location,” said Harvey.

Julios considered the response then nodded and raised an eyebrow in another silent question.

“It’s a safe enough spot. In a small grass clearing along a country lane in the sticks,” said Harvey. “I checked it all out.”

But Julios’ face remained the same. The question hadn’t been fully answered.

"It looks like a turning space for tractors and farm machinery. It's no bigger than required, just enough for two vans to pull up side by side. It’s protected from the road by big hedges, and it’s one minute to the M11 motorway at high speed."

Harvey took a sip of his coffee before he continued.

“There are thick trees on three sides of the location. We’ll need to be there first to do a recce and see anybody coming. So there’s no real chance of an ambush.”

A slight nod from Julios was enough to confirm his approval.
