Chapter Sixteen

The mask covered the wearer’s face entirely. There were no holes for her eyes or mouth, just a shapeless egg that reflected enough light to make it look like the glow was coming from within. Ari turned it over in her hands a few times before she finally shook her head to admit defeat.

“I give up. How can you possibly use this in concert?”

Dierdre grinned. “Put it on.”

Ari raised an eyebrow but lifted the mask - more of a helmet, really - and slipped it over her head. It was completely black inside, but she felt something like the padding around binocular lenses at eye level. Dierdre steadied the mask.

“Okay, close your eyes.”

Ari did as she was told, even though it seemed pointless, but then she saw light through her eyelids. She opened them carefully to see a blurry and fishbowled version of the living room. Dierdre was standing close enough that her features were distorted when she smiled. She had her hands on either side of the mask.

“Can you see me?”

“I can,” Ari said. “What is this?”

Dierdre pointed. “There are miniature cameras right here and here, embedded in the mask and covered with one-way glass. You can see them in a dark room, but natural lighting is enough to make them opaque. I wear a mic on my collar that picks up my voice from the neck-hole. The downside is that it gives my voice a horrible echo. This was the last time I let Edith cover my mouth. But I love the mask. It’s my absolute favorite. I wear it sometimes for public appearances or when it doesn’t matter if my voice is a little muffled.”

The cameras turned off and Ari eased her head out of the helmet. “I have to admit, it’s pretty cool. I can’t imagine it’s very comfortable after a three-hour show.”

“God no.” Dierdre took the mask back and returned it to the protective case on the coffee table. “Edith makes them as comfortable as possible, but there’s only so much she can do. At the end of the day, most of my face is still enclosed in a shell.”

“Is it worth it? Protecting your privacy is a big deal, I know, but you have to assume the truth will come out eventually.”

Dierdre considered the question. “I want to do this for a long time. The rest of my life, hopefully. And yes, eventually people will know my real name. But I figure I’m going to enjoy the anonymity for as long as I can before I’m forced to be a celebrity every minute of every day.” She gestured at the computer. "Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the routine, I go on Twitter and I find photos of Anna Kendrick out at lunch or Keanu Reeves on the subway, and I’d know I was making the right choice. Which is ironic, because I’m hiding to prevent pictures like that being taken of me. But I can go down to the Whole Foods and no one would look twice at me.
