‘WHAT HAPPENS IN BINISAFUA’

They started Irina’s tour of the island with a trip to the top of Monte Toro, Menorca’s only mountain, standing at over 1100 ft high at the centre of the island. Frank thought it would be a good place to begin as, with a Panoramic view, you could see the whole of Menorca.

As they stood in a viewing area near the summit, he pointed out many of the landmarks and towns. The bays and the lighthouses. It was a breathtaking view and she was most impressed.

They took a cruise around the island in a glass-bottomed boat. Irina said she felt a little seasick in the confined observation area below deck. But she seemed to enjoy the sight of the many shoals of colourful fish. They even saw a pod of Dolphins and she squealed with delight as they swam past the windows.

He took her shopping to the designer outlets and stores at Ferreries and Mercadal. She bought a hat and some Avarcas (Menorcan Sandals) and a pink candy-striped shirt that she thought would look good on him (Frank thought it a bit garish but said he loved it).

They visited historic buildings and ancient Talaiot monuments.

They dined at some of Menorca’s finest restaurants (Charlie had insisted that they put everything on his tab).

They danced the night away at the Xoroi Caves clifftop nightspot.

They laughed. They sang. They drank. She seemed able to drink copious amounts of her favourite tipple – Vodka and Cranberry Juice. Frank tried to match her in Scotches but regretted it the next morning.

Over the weeks they became good friends.

This was in spite of the ubiquitous presence of her gofer, the ever-present Goran.

He was the same a surly looking character that he had seen by Irina’s dressing room. The one with a double-headed eagle tattoo on his neck. Mean and muscular looking, it was easy to see why Irina had employed him as both baggage hauler and her personal bodyguard.

His cold dark eyes took everything in slowly as if it were a threat. They surveyed Frank with distain. Not that he ever said anything offensive or insulting to Frank, but he could tell the man disliked him intensely.

If he didn’t know any better, he would have said that Goran was more than a little jealous of his friendship with Irina. But then, the personal dislike was mutual. Especially as he had the infuriating habit of accompanying Irina everywhere they went.

He spoke very little English. At least he gave everyone that impression. He seemed to communicate mainly in grunts. So, conversation between them was kept at an absolute minimum. Which was more than agreeable with Frank.

He realised one day that they had not done the one essential thing that is part of the Menorca experience. A picnic on the beach (ideally without Goran in tow). Followed by a swim and snorkel. She loved the idea.

Frank, a keen snorkeler himself, said there could only be one place that would fit the bill. Binisafua Cala.

This narrow inlet is
