I can’t sleep; my thoughts are too noisy. There are too many of them. All desperate to be heard. I don’t want to hear them, though. Not tonight. I want to sleep. To escape to a dream world where my problems don’t exist.

The insides of my stomach flutter. I recognise this feeling. It was the sensation I used to feel when Evelyn would shift position. Her little kicks.

I had come up with the name Evelyn after hearing the phrase Everliving in me whilst in hospital. No one knew about the name, and so Isabella could only have obtained that information from my dad – a man who died five months ago from heart failure. A single father who brought me up alone after his wife died giving birth to me.

I had taken my mother’s life.

And I had caused my own unborn child to die.

I hear the Tube guy’s words: You’re very blessed in your job. But you’ve sinned. They reverberate around my head.

The urge to paint becomes so strong. It doesn’t matter how physically tired I am. Nor does it matter how emotionally drained I feel. It is the middle of the night, and I need to paint.

Hours pass; I’m not sure how many. My eyesight is blurry. My wrist aches. But I keep painting.

The intercom buzzes, snapping me out of my vision. Outside, the sky has turned to a cloudy grey. My empty stomach gurgles. I check my watch: it’s after one in the afternoon. I’ve been painting for almost eight hours.

I ignore the buzzer as it continues. But the person downstairs doesn’t give up. I let out an exasperated groan and press the button, fighting the urge to shout ‘go away’ into the speaker.

Jonathan’s voice escapes from the intercom. ‘Mrs Andrews? I need to speak to you.’ My heart rate quickens. Why won’t he just leave me alone?

‘I’m in the middle of something.’

‘It’s about Robert.’

‘I told you I didn’t need your services anymore, Jonathan.’

‘It’s urgent.’

‘I don’t want to know.’

‘Believe me, ma’am. You do.’

I stare at my bandaged hand, unsure what to do. Maybe Jonathan has come to tell me Robert was the masked man in the basement – I have no idea how he’d even find that out, though. Or maybe he finally has concrete evidence of an affair. I glance over my shoulder. My painting beckons me, but my curiosity wins.

I venture downstairs and open the door to the street. An array of faces dash past me, but I can’t see Jonathan amongst them. In frustration, I step back into the safety of the building. I’m about to close the door when Jonathan appears from the right, making me jump. He drops a newspaper onto a pile of rubbish bags left out by the Thai restaurant next door.

‘Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you,’ he says, glancing at my hands.

‘Jonathan, I made it clear I wanted this case closed.’

‘Yes, I know. But you haven’t paid me the balance yet, so technically the case is still open.’

‘That’s because you haven’t sent me your invoice.
