Michael suggests that if you are unfit you should ease yourself into HIT. Don’t exercise if you feel unwell; your body needs its resources to get better. Anyone who has doubts about their health should have a medical check-up before starting any form of exercise.
Strength training
Of course, getting fit is about more than simply doing cardiovascular exercise, whether you take a traditional approach or try HIT. A beach-fit body requires tone and flexibility too. Weight training while fasting can help your body build more lean muscle (particularly if you are male) and maintain bone density. It will give you a lengthened, strengthened figure – exactly what you want as you head for the beach with only a swimsuit for company. The following simple, familiar exercises are just suggestions; you may well have your own favourites. Since you don’t need any specialist equipment – just the resistance of your own body weight – you can do them anywhere, any time. You could do them now. Include some or all of the following exercises, adapted from fitness expert Peta Bee’s programme in Fast Exercise, on the days when you’re not doing HIT.
