Chapter Twenty-Eight

It wasn’t often that Simon saw the Houston office of the Texas Rangers this empty. Other than a few scattered cubicles the whole floor was bathed in the sallow glow of city’s ambient streetlights and other buildings peering in from the windows. Simon didn’t like the strangeness of office buildings at night.

He was creeped out by the long shadows of filing cabinets and always surprising motion detecting florescent lighting that buzzed an octave higher at night for whatever reason. It was unsettling, and Simon hurried to his office, waving at the pair of eyes that popped over the top of Richardson’s cubicle when he had stepped off the elevator. Simon couldn’t quite make out the face in the dark and he hoped it was actually Richardson.

Simon didn’t think that Melissa or the Order were crazy enough to mount an attack on the Texas Rangers HQ, but before yesterday he would have said that Melissa wasn’t crazy enough to try and attack the Transempirial, so there wasn’t much he took off the table. On the off chance that Richardson had been replaced with an Order plant, Simon decided to lock his office door.

He stepped into his office and turned gingerly on his stiff leg to pull the door shut behind him only to find it blocked by a hand gripping it from the other side. His suspense lasted only a second before his boss, the Headquarters Captain, John Blantan, an all-around decent guy, stuck his head in the gap. He had always leaned a little heavily into the western wear aspect of their dress code for Simon’s personal taste, but the white Stetson looked good on the man, and tonight Simon could appreciate a few more white hats.

“McGreggor,” Blantan’s rich west Texas drawl barreled through the empty floor knocking the quiet out of the whole place. “Back from the front lines? You look like you could use a drink and a shower.”

“You would not be wrong, sir.” Simon took a much-needed breath and tried to let the tension in his shoulders relax. It didn’t work.

“Well, I won’t keep you long then.” Blantan nodded his head taking a step into the office, forcing Simon to move behind his desk to make room for him. Blantan leaned one arm onto the lone black office chair, bracing himself on his palm. “Seems like HPD has a hard on for you something fierce. That Captain Munroe already sent in a request for your assistance on this case. Said something about loose ends.”

Simon made to say something, explain at least in part what had happened. Blantan held up his free hand to stop him, the white Stetson now dangling from his fingertips.

“I told ‘em that you can assist on a temporary basis, if that is what you want.” Blantan sighed, a testament to how long the day had been for all of them. “I know riding a desk is eat’n you up and your quick actions tonight made it clear that you still have some gas in the tank, but your more than a quick draw now ‘a days.
