Chapter 17

23rd of November (Four weeks after)

It is a fortnight since Elizabeth experienced her unfortunate fall, and during this time, she has shown remarkable strides in her recovery journey.

The physiotherapy regimen designed for her is progressing as anticipated, and she is steadily regaining strength with each passing day.

Gerry faithfully maintains his daily visits to Elizabeth, often extending his stay well into the evening.

In addition to tending to Elizabeth, he diligently prepares their home for her eventual return while balancing his responsibilities to his mother.

During one of his outings, Gerry purchases an exquisite duvet set adorned with enchanting blue and grey butterflies and flowers.

This thoughtful choice is inspired by a Sir David Attenborough documentary about butterflies they had watched together in the hospital.

Learning of Elizabeth’s keen interest in the creature, especially her admiration for the captivating life cycle of a butterfly, Gerry makes the connection that butterflies hold a special place among her favourite animals.

It’s a bittersweet realisation, however, as Elizabeth, due to her condition, doesn’t recall these shared moments and conversations that Gerry tells her about.

Despite this, Gerry remains dedicated to creating a warm and comforting environment for her return.

Kate enters the room with a lively energy, her eyes shifting between Gerry and Elizabeth. “I’ve got some fantastic news. It’s time to start gathering your things. You’ll be heading home today,” she announces brightly.

Elizabeth glances uncertainly at Gerry, who meets her gaze head-on. Attempting to reassure her, he grasps her hand, a gesture that surprises her; this time, she doesn’t pull away.

Standing together, they lock eyes, and an inexplicable fluttering sensation takes hold within Elizabeth, a cascade of butterflies dancing in her stomach.

Early in the afternoon, Elizabeth and Gerry commence the task of packing her belongings, a process that stirs a mix of emotions for both.

The room holds a palpable atmosphere—a blend of excitement and apprehension.

Gerry, in particular, is consumed with hopes that everything is meticulously in place. On the other hand, Elizabeth feels uneasy about returning home with a man she can’t remember meeting, let alone marrying.

Yet, trust seems to be her only option.

The black holdall, slightly dusty from its perch atop Gerry’s wardrobe, serves as the craft for Elizabeth’s sparse possessions.

Two nighties, seven pairs of knickers, a grey hoodie with orange zips, and a fluffy dressing gown with matching slippers seamlessly find their place within the bag.

When Elizabeth questions Gerry about their origin, he casually mentions acquiring them from “home,” skillfully deflecting her suspicions.

Curious about the clothes’ origin and sizing, Elizabeth probes further. Gerry, feigning hurt, admits to taking them from her drawers.

Unbeknownst to her, he has meticulously stocked her drawers and wardrobe with items from local charity shops, carefully selecting beautiful clothing and lingerie to create a convincing illusion.

Today, Gerry introduces a new addition to her wardrobe—a pair of seemingly oversized black leggings, a long-sleeved top with apparent extra room, and a black hoodie with orange zips.

Elizabeth notices a recurring theme of orange, unaware that Gerry has recently purchased these clothes for her.
