She was gorgeous. Her face was flushed as she danced the night away. “Want another drink?” I asked her.

“Yes, please,” she said, slightly out of breath as we headed back to our table.

I dropped a kiss on her forehead before heading up to the bar. I turned to watch her while I waited for her drink and declared her to be the sexiest woman in the place. She was younger than probably anyone else in the bar, but one would never be able to tell. She had poise and dignity and moved with grace. Our first date was going much better than I could have ever imagined.

It was a date. I was on a date with a woman half my age as well as the other half of my soul. I knew there was a good chance tonight would be our last night together. Tomorrow she’d go back to her dorm and then shoot me a text that evening, telling me her roommate was back and she wanted to hang out with her. Then classes would start, and I would only see her in passing. It was what she had told me from the very beginning. I’d let myself go along with our little winter break affair, knowing it wasn’t meant to last.

“Why do you look so serious?” she asked playfully as I handed her the fresh drink.

“I’m always serious.”

She shook her head. “Uh-uh. I know what you’re thinking about. Don’t.”

“I’m not thinking about anything but getting you home,” I lied.

“You can think about that all you want, but don’t think about anything else,” she warned.

She was right. She knew what I was thinking because we’d spent enough time together that we knew each other very well now. I smiled at her, resting my hand on hers and staring out at the growing crowd. It was almost midnight. I planned on kissing her when the clock struck twelve and then getting her home to ring in the new year the right way.

Sunny was young and beautiful and it wasn’t fair to her to throw away her youth to saddle herself with an old guy like me. She had a lot more living to do. I didn’t want to be the one to hold her back. “I’m going to visit the boy’s room. When I get back, you better be ready to dance,” I told her with a smile.

Her full, red lips were wrapped around the little straw in her glass as she sucked down the liquid. “I’ll be waiting for you.”

I left her and headed for the small hallway where the restrooms were tucked away. When I walked back into the main area, I immediately looked to the table where I had left Sunny. There was a man talking to her, sitting in the seat I had vacated. Jealousy ran through me as I watched the man openly flirt with her, staring at her in a way that I didn’t appreciate.

I tamped down the jealousy. I wasn’t about to ruin her night by getting into a bar fight.
