The possessed rat stood on top of the alpha rat, pinning it down. The murderous rodent bit into the flesh of the trapped creature, pulling its sinewy body apart in long strands like mozzarella on a pizza as the ill-fated rat screamed.

The diabolical rat with satanic sludge in its veins killed for pleasure, for dominance. It fed on the terror it had instilled in the other creatures, slurping the life force out of its prey like soup from a spoon, smacking its lips in satisfaction.

A general state of dread had taken up residence in the wild overgrown area outside the Red Carpet. The encroaching fire didn’t help calm any of the creatures' frayed nerves, but that wasn’t even their biggest problem. The possessed rat was.

Before its arrival, there had been a natural order; the squirrels, blue jays, and rats cohabitated peacefully. Watchful for larger predators, they shared the food provided by the forest and the wasteful humans, picking different times to forage for food like factory workers on opposite shifts. There were a few raids on caches of nuts here and there, but that was mostly an in-house problem, squirrel-on-squirrel crime. Stealing another squirrel’s stash had been happening for millions of years and would probably continue for millions more if the species were lucky enough to survive that long.

But the evil element's arrival altered the way of life in the small forest. The creatures now lived under the rule of a dictator where disobedience meant death. It was akin to being invaded by a bloodthirsty warlord that showed no mercy. The urban wildlife hid in the protection of their nests for fear of being taken by the possessed rat, and mothers kept their offspring close by, whispering this new danger into their ears.

Even the other rats who had, before the arrival of the supernatural element, been harmoniously co-existing weren’t spared the wrath of the demonic rat. The ill-fated rat that had been taken over by the evil element was, before its possession, a zeta rat, one of the lowest members of the colony. Almost an outcast, the rat lived like a loner on the edges of the social hierarchy the pack had established. Now, possessed by the abominable substance, the once marginalized rat commandeered the alpha rat role, upsetting the pack's social structure.

Remembering every abuse it had suffered when it was the lowest rat in the group, the vindictive rat now dominated the others. Gruesomely killing the dominant alpha in front of the others served as a warning to the rest of the pack that their new leader would not tolerate insubordination. Bodies of dead rats that had tried to resist their new master were strewn throughout the blackberry thicket, the diabolical rat draining the life force of each one and leaving them to rot in the summer heat.

Overhead, the vultures circled, but after investigating the carrion, even they left it alone. Unable to ignore the stench of evil radiating off the carcasses, the scavenging birds flew off, leaving the maggots to feast.
