One should note that despite some similarities, this doctrine differs slightly both from the earlier medieval idea of the “Two Swords” (which did not divide humanity into two parts, as Luther did, and which suggested that temporal authorities must submit to spiritual ones), and from the later Enlightenment concept of a division between church and state (which conceived of a purely secular state with no interest in the religious views of its citizens).
