“Not a chance. I have a flight to Dubai in the morning,” a woman grumbled to her friend.

“Screw this. They can’t legally make us stay here. What are they going to do, arrest us?” a man said loud enough for the people around him to nod in agreement. The murmur of panic grew louder as more of the guests protested against the sheriff’s instructions. The man and his wife stomped out of the room, bolstering the other guests’ bravery.

There was movement above me. On the second landing stood the twins, their forearms draped over the banister, utterly casual. When our eyes met, Kennedy’s pale face spread into a lopsided grimace. He said something to Emmett, whose face remained stoic as they continued to stare right at me. I looked away, a shiver raising the hairs on my forearms.

I wanted to turn and walk out, disappearing with the other guests, but I knew there were eyes on me because I was an outsider. They were watching.

As soon as the sheriff left the room, many more guests left despite his request. The guests that were too afraid to disobey him remained, including those of us who were stuck here, no matter what.

When the guests who were leaving had departed the house, I pulled Murray out of the entrance hall, dragging him by his hand. Now that the initial shock of Beau’s murder was wearing off, I was left with the intrusive mental image of Cindy’s beautiful, smirking face and the rest of the guests slack-jawed with shock and titillation. Phillip’s bungled toast had been a betrayal, even if accidental, and although the murder had shaken us all, that stupid toast was still on my mind.
