Chapter 8
The buzzing alarm pounded into Alex’s brain. Dan hopped out of bed and flicked it off like it was the easiest thing he’d ever done. Alex groaned and rolled to see the clock. He wiped at his bleary eyes in an effort to discern the red numbers.
Six o’clock in the morning?
It wasn’t even light out yet. Dan bent over Alex and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
He whispered, “Go back to bed. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Don’t go. Come cuddle.”
Dan smiled and then sat on the edge of the bed. He only had on his plain white boxers. His big bearish chest with all that dark hair reminded Alex of the previous night, and more parts woke up than just his brain.
Dan said, “I can’t stay. I have work. I’m trying to be better, but it’s been such a big part of my life. It’s going to take some time for me to cut back to normal hours.” Then he smiled his kind smile. “But for you, it’s definitely worth it.”
Those words felt better than Alex expected. The earlier erotic desire shifted to a warm glow in his chest. Everything suddenly looked brighter. Dan kissed Alex, and Alex relented.
“Okay.”
Dan left the bedroom, and Alex plopped back into the soft and empty bed. He tried to fall asleep, but every muscle in his body seemed to vibrate with energy.
He got up and went to the window. The sunrise had just begun, and Alex stared in awe. Colors were more vibrant than he remembered. Burgundies and yellows streaked the horizon.
It was only then that Alex noticed the leaves on the trees had changed colors as well. He couldn’t believe so much beauty existed in the world around him without him ever noticing it before.
Was it that vial of water that had done this to him? He didn’t want to think about that. Now that everything seemed to be going so well, he knew the curse of Alex would strike again. Somehow that vial of water would ruin everything.
Alex went to the kitchen and made a pot of coffee. He sat at his tiny table and took a few sips. Even the coffee tasted better. It was almost as if all his senses had been amplified.
A rustle at the door startled Alex. He cautiously walked over to see what had happened. He hoped he didn’t have mice again. A small square of paper had been slipped under the door. Alex smiled. Was it some romantic gesture from Dan?
He picked it up. The letter read:
Oliver and the Bear rehearsal tonight at 7. Already confirmed with Grille that you don’t work tonight.
-David
Alex wanted to scream. David was so infuriating. He couldn’t believe he had gone directly to Robert instead of asking the star of the play for a good rehearsal time. What if he had plans with Dan? David thought the world revolved around him, and the town obliged in the fantasy.
Alex decided he’d give David a piece of his mind at rehearsal.
One. Two.
